Pavan Davuluri Announces Major Windows Quality Overhaul to Restore User Experience
A Faster, Less Intrusive Windows is Coming to Insiders.

Pavan Davuluri, Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, recently shared a candid blog post outlining a new strategic direction for the operating system. Acknowledging years of community feedback, Davuluri emphasized that Microsoft is pivoting to prioritize system quality and user agency over aggressive feature pushing.

The first wave of these community-driven changes will begin rolling out to Windows Insiders in April 2026. Key updates include:

1. The Return of Taskbar Flexibility

In a highly requested move, the ability to move the Taskbar to the top, left, or right of the screen a staple since Windows 95 is officially returning. This restores a level of desktop customization that power users have been demanding since the launch of Windows 11.

2. De-cluttering the AI Experience

Microsoft is scaling back the omnipresence of Copilot. To make AI interactions more intentional, the deep integration of Copilot will be reduced in core apps like Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad, ensuring that AI tools appear only when they add genuine value.

3. Less Intrusive Windows Updates

The update experience is getting a major rethink to reduce disruption:

  • Users can now choose to reboot without immediate installation during the first update cycle.

  • The frequency of mandatory "Automatic Reboots" will be significantly decreased.

4. Performance First: File Explorer & Widgets

  • File Explorer: A renewed focus on raw performance aims to eliminate lag, speed up app launches, and ensure a fluid navigation experience.

  • Widgets: The default behavior for Widgets will be set to "Silent," giving users more granular control over notifications and distractions.

During 2024-2025, Microsoft faced heavy criticism for cramming too much AI (copilot) and advertising into the UI. A restructuring that separated the AI team from the product team (as previously reported by Satya Nadella) allowed the Windows team to refocus on "stability," the core of an operating system.

Davuluri's emphasis on File Explorer isn't just about speed; it's about resolving the accumulated "technical debt" of older code, enabling Windows to compete with smoother systems like macOS or even ChromeOS in terms of user perception of speed.

Another important announcement is the upgrade of the Insider Program. Microsoft will emphasize Insiders as the true "front line" for bug screening, rather than passing those bugs on to the general public, which will help restore lost trust.

The popularity of Windows handhelds (such as the ROG Ally and Legion Go) made Microsoft realize that a cluttered and resource-intensive UI was a major weakness. Redesigning the taskbar and reducing background widget processes was therefore a crucial step in making Windows work well across all form factors, not just on PCs.
