Spotify Unveils Customizable "Taste Profile": Take Command of Your Recommendations with AI PromptsAt the recent SXSW festival, Gustav Söderström, Co-CEO of Spotify, introduced a significant upgrade to the platform's personalization engine. Users will soon be able to access and manually refine their "Taste Profile" a core data set that defines how Spotify understands their listening habits.
The Power to Edit Your Digital Ear
Within the new Taste Profile interface, users can view a comprehensive history of their music, podcasts, and audiobooks. For the first time, listeners can "fine-tune" their preferences by:
Adjusting Weights: Increasing or decreasing the influence of specific genres or categories on future recommendations.
AI Prompts: Using natural language prompts (e.g., "Focus more on lo-fi beats for studying") to instantly reshape their discovery feed.
Eliminating "Recommendation Noise"
Spotify acknowledged that a user’s history doesn't always reflect their true taste. Life events such as playing white noise for sleep or children’s music for parenting often skew the algorithm. This new feature allows users to exclude these specific sessions, ensuring that late-night lullabies don't haunt their daytime "Discover Weekly" playlists.
The feature is currently rolling out to Premium subscribers in New Zealand as a pilot program, with a global expansion planned for the coming months.
Previously, Spotify's algorithms were often viewed as a "black box" that users couldn't modify. Making Taste Profiles visible and editable creates algorithmic transparency, reducing the frustration of Spotify recommending songs you don't really want to listen to.
The introduction of Prompts reflects Spotify's transition from a mere "music player" to a fully personalized AI DJ. Instead of frequently skipping songs, users can express their preferences verbally, a major trend in generative AI applications.
As recommendations become more accurate, small-scale artists and podcast creators will have greater access to "real listeners." This will reduce the skip rate and ensure royalties are paid only to songs listeners are genuinely interested in, not just those playing idly.
While Apple Music focuses on human-curated playlists, Spotify is making a big gamble on "hybrid curation" (human + AI) to maintain its leading position in the increasingly competitive music streaming market.
