The End of an Era: Apple Officially Discontinues Mac Pro, Crowns Mac Studio as its Desktop King

Apple has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the Mac Pro lineup. The news surfaced after eagle-eyed users noticed that detailed product pages for the Mac Pro were removed from Apple’s website. Currently, direct links to purchase the Mac Pro redirect users to the general Mac landing page. In a follow-up statement, Apple clarified that there are no future plans for new Mac Pro models.

The Silicon Transition Legacy

The Mac Pro received its final update in 2023, featuring the M2 Ultra chip. This launch was a symbolic milestone, completing Apple’s transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon across its entire Mac lineup. However, questions regarding the Mac Pro’s longevity emerged immediately; the significantly smaller Mac Studio offered the same M2 Ultra chip, and in many professional workflows, the high-end MacBook Pro provided more than enough power, making the massive tower design of the Mac Pro feel redundant.

Mac Studio: The New High-End Standard

With the Mac Pro officially retired, the Mac Studio now stands as Apple’s flagship desktop for professionals. The current top-tier configuration features the M3 Ultra, boasting:

  • 32-Core CPU and 80-Core GPU

  • 256GB of Unified Memory

  • 16TB of SSD Storage

The most prominent feature of the Mac Pro during the Intel era was its expandability via PCIe slots (e.g., adding a graphics card). However, in the Apple Silicon era, everything is integrated into a single chip (System on a Chip - SoC), making the internal slots in the final Mac Pro model virtually meaningless as it's impossible to add an external GPU. Discontinuing the Mac Pro thus acknowledged that a "tower architecture" is no longer necessary for Apple's chip architecture.

The Ultra series chips (M2 Ultra/M3 Ultra) have excellent power and thermal management, allowing smaller machines like the Mac Studio to dissipate heat efficiently without needing the large case of the Mac Pro. With equivalent performance in a size that's less than a quarter, Pro-level customers opted for the space-saving Mac Studio.

The processing power of the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro is strong enough to smoothly edit 8K video or run large AI models, creating a high demand for... The concept of "fixed desktop computers" is diminishing. Modern artists and engineers demand mobility, which the Mac Pro couldn't provide.

The discontinuation of the Mac Pro allowed Apple to simplify its production and supply chain, enabling it to focus resources on developing the future M4 Ultra and M5 chips, making the Mac Studio the true beast of the workstation market instead.
