Google Disrupts the AI Video Market: New "Veo 3.1 Lite" Offers High-Quality Generations at 1/8th the Cost

Google has officially expanded its generative video lineup with the launch of Veo 3.1 Lite. Positioned as the most cost-effective model in the series, Veo 3.1 Lite aims to democratize high-fidelity video creation by significantly lowering the barrier to entry for developers and creators.

Unbeatable Pricing Structure

The standout feature of Veo 3.1 Lite is its aggressive pricing. Google has managed to slash costs significantly compared to its more powerful siblings:

  • 3x Cheaper than Veo 3.1 Fast.

  • 8x Cheaper than the flagship Veo 3.1 (Large) model.

For a 720p video, the price is set at just $0.05 per second. In comparison, Veo 3.1 Fast currently costs $0.15 per second (slated to drop to $0.10 on April 7), while the flagship Veo 3.1 remains at $0.40 per second.

Performance Without Compromise

Despite the "Lite" branding, Google confirms that the generation speed of Veo 3.1 Lite matches that of Veo 3.1 Fast. The model supports video resolutions of both 720p and 1080p with integrated audio.

To achieve this price point, Google has streamlined the feature set by removing 4K support and the Video Extension capability (which allows for lengthening existing clips). The model is available immediately via the Gemini API and Google AI Studio.

The short video market (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) is experiencing massive growth. Google's release of Veo 3.1 Lite at $0.05 per second makes creating a 10-second ad or content cost only $0.50, making it affordable even for small online merchants and creators.

Veo's strength surpasses competitors like Sora (OpenAI) or Runway this year is its built-in "native audio" functionality. The removal of 4K support while retaining audio indicates Google's focus on practical use on social media, where 1080p resolution is sufficient.

The launch via Google AI Studio allows app developers to embed Veo 3.1 Lite into photo editing or video editing applications at a profitable price (sustainable unit economics). Previously, AI video services were often too expensive for mass market use.

The announcement of a price reduction for the Fast version on April 7th clearly signals Google's preparation for the launch of new models from competitors earlier this month. This is the first price war in the AI video industry where consumers will fully benefit.
