Amazon Zoox Partners with Uber to Deploy Revolutionary Robotaxis in Las Vegas and Los Angeles

Zoox, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Amazon, has announced a strategic partnership with Uber to integrate its self-driving robotaxis into the Uber platform. This collaboration aims to scale the availability of autonomous ride-hailing services, combining Zoox’s cutting-edge hardware with Uber’s massive user base.

Launch Roadmap: Las Vegas and Beyond

Uber plans to roll out the Zoox autonomous service starting this summer, with Las Vegas serving as the inaugural city. A broader expansion into Los Angeles is scheduled for mid-2027.

When a user requests a ride via the Uber app, the system will automatically dispatch a Zoox vehicle if the route and conditions are met. While the service will be available on Uber, the dedicated Zoox app will continue to operate independently, allowing Zoox to maintain its direct-to-consumer relationship while significantly expanding its reach through the Uber ecosystem.

A New Paradigm in Passenger Transport

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, emphasized that Zoox’s vehicle is not just a modified car but a completely redesigned cabin built specifically for autonomous transit. "Zoox has reimagined the vehicle from the ground up to be an autonomous passenger carriage," Khosrowshahi stated. "This partnership represents a significant milestone in bringing a unique, world-class technology to our global platform."

What sets Zoox apart from Waymo or Tesla is its design, which lacks a steering wheel and driver's seat. Zoox vehicles utilize carriage-style seating, providing ample legroom and a relaxed, mobile living room-like atmosphere. This redefines "riding hailing" as "renting a private space" on the road.

Zoox vehicles are designed for bidirectional driving and have four-wheel steering, allowing them to maneuver and park in tight spaces like Las Vegas much better than conventional cars. This helps reduce traffic congestion and saves travel time in densely populated areas.

This deal reflects Uber's strategy of becoming a "Super App" for transportation without having to build its own vehicles. Acquiring Zoox provides Uber with the safest and most advanced self-driving technology immediately, without the massive hardware manufacturing costs.

Zoox vehicles are 100% electric and equipped with sensors including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, making them highly safe at night the peak activity time in Las Vegas. This partnership accelerates Uber's goal of clean and safe transportation (Net Zero & Vision Zero).
