Epic Games Announces Massive Layoffs: Over 1,000 Staff Cut as Fortnite Revenues Decline

In a significant blow to the gaming industry, Epic Games has officially announced the layoff of over 1,000 employees. The decision comes as the company’s flagship title and primary revenue driver, Fortnite, experiences a noticeable downturn in its active player base.

A Struggle with Over-Expansion

Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games, addressed the situation by admitting that the company had significantly "over-hired" during previous periods of growth. According to Sweeney, the decline in Fortnite engagement which began in early 2025 has forced the company to take drastic measures to stabilize its financial health and cut operational costs.

The Sunset of Key Game Modes

As part of this restructuring, Epic Games is also narrowing its creative focus by shutting down several sub-modes within the Fortnite ecosystem. The confirmed modes slated for closure include:

  • Rocket Racing

  • Ballistic

  • Festival Battle Stage

During 2024-2025, Epic Games attempted to transform Fortnite into a "Platform of Platforms" (Metaverse) by adding modes like LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Festival. However, results in 2026 showed that most players still preferred the traditional "Battle Royale" mode. Closing these sub-modes is therefore a tacit admission that the content distribution strategy wasn't as effective as expected.

Reports indicate that Epic Games is investing massive resources in developing Unreal Engine 6. Layoffs in the game division may therefore be a shift of budget to focus on "development tools" (engine), a more sustainable long-term revenue stream in an era of saturation in the console gaming market.

Fortnite's most formidable competitor isn't Call of Duty, but Roblox and platforms that emphasize player-created games. Even with Fortnite's Creative system, the revenue sharing with independent developers (Creator Economy 2.0) has reduced Epic Games' net profit, forcing them to cut costs on their permanent workforce.

This round of layoffs may be preparation for focusing on major projects that fans are eagerly awaiting, such as Grand Theft Auto VI (as a store-side partner) or a secret project with Disney, which recently invested in the company, in order to create a new, "leaner" entertainment empire.
