OpenAI Rumored to Develop "GitHub Rival" as Relationship with Microsoft Fractures

According to a report from The Information, OpenAI is reportedly developing its own internal source code management system to rival GitHub. The decision stems from growing frustrations within OpenAI regarding GitHub’s recent performance issues and frequent service outages, which have reportedly hampered development workflows.

From Internal Tool to Potential Market Competitor

While the software does not yet have an official name, it is expected to remain in development for several more months. Sources suggest that while the project was initially intended solely for internal use, there have been high-level discussions within OpenAI about eventually offering the platform as a service to external customers. Such a move would position OpenAI as a direct competitor in the version control market.

Strained Ties: The Microsoft-AWS Friction

The move away from GitHub is seen as another sign of the deteriorating relationship between OpenAI and its primary benefactor, Microsoft. Tensions have escalated following OpenAI’s decision to accept investment from AWS (Amazon Web Services) Microsoft Azure’s fiercest rival. This pivot toward a multi-cloud strategy signals OpenAI’s desire for independence from the Microsoft ecosystem.

What's noteworthy is that this system might not just be a typical code repository (Git), but an "AI-First Repository" with GPT-5 (or newer) models embedded at the core for automated code review, debugging, and refactoring that's far more sophisticated than GitHub Copilot.

For a company running large models and employing world-class engineers like OpenAI, even a few minutes of downtime means significant damage. Frequent GitHub outages may have been the final straw, prompting OpenAI to seek complete control of its own full-stack infrastructure for maximum stability.

Holding its source code in-house ensures OpenAI is 100% certain that its confidential code won't be used to train competitors' models (despite its agreement with Microsoft). It also prepares for a possible future formal termination of its relationship with Microsoft (the "Divorce" Strategy).

Receiving payment from AWS isn't just about money; it's about accessing Amazon's Trainium and Inferentia chips, an alternative to the scarce NVIDIA chips. Building its own code management tools will enable seamless deployment across clouds (Azure to AWS).
