Thinking Machines Lab Joins Forces with NVIDIA: A Multi-Year Partnership to Build a Massive 1GW AI Data Center
Thinking Machines Lab, the high-profile AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, has announced a strategic multi-year partnership with NVIDIA. The collaboration aims to construct a colossal AI data center with a power capacity of at least 1 gigawatt (GW). This infrastructure will be powered by NVIDIA’s latest "Vera Rubin" platform, launched earlier this year, and is expected to be fully operational by early 2027.
Strategic Investment and Visionary Leadership
In addition to providing hardware, NVIDIA confirmed its role as a strategic investor in Thinking Machines Lab to support the company’s long-term scaling efforts. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, praised the partnership, stating:
"AI is the most powerful tool for discovering new knowledge in human history. Thinking Machines possesses a world-class team capable of developing next-generation AI models that will define the vision for our future."
Building a 1GW data center is no ordinary feat; this is enough electricity to power an entire medium-sized city. Thinking Machines Lab's need for such massive power reflects their focus on developing a "Frontier Model" far more complex than GPT-4 or the current generation, with a focus on deep reasoning.
The Vera Rubin platform is NVIDIA's latest chip, released in 2026 (building upon Blackwell), designed for energy-efficient yet high-performance computing. Mira Murati's early access to this technology demonstrates their close relationship with NVIDIA and may signify exclusive software tuning for the hardware.
Unlike other AI companies that focus on chatbots for consumer use, Thinking Machines Lab is seen as prioritizing "Fundamental Research." NVIDIA's investment in this project could be a gamble on Mira's AI being key to designing the next generation of chips or discovering new materials science.
The consolidation of former OpenAI's top-tier team under the Thinking Machines Lab, coupled with unwavering support from NVIDIA, has made this company a "magnet" attracting world-class AI engineers and potentially becoming the most formidable competitor to both OpenAI and Google in the near future.
