Yann LeCun AMI Labs Shatters Records with $1B Seed Round to Redefine AI Strategy.
AI Pioneer Yann LeCun Debuts "AMI Labs" with Record-Breaking $1.03 Billion Seed Round

Yann LeCun, the former Chief AI Scientist at Meta who departed the tech giant in late 2025, has officially launched his new venture: Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI Labs). The startup has immediately made history by announcing a staggering $1.03 billion seed funding round, marking the largest initial investment ever recorded for an AI startup.

Challenging the LLM Status Quo

The strategic direction of AMI Labs aligns perfectly with LeCun’s long-standing criticisms of current AI trends. He has frequently argued that Large Language Models (LLMs) alone are insufficient to achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Instead, AMI Labs will focus on developing a new class of models designed to:

  • Understand the Physical World: Moving beyond text to true world-model comprehension.

  • Persistent Memory: Creating AI that remembers and learns continuously over time.

  • Reasoning and Planning: Equipping models with the ability to think logically and strategize like humans.

AMI Labs will operate globally, with key research hubs established in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore.

LeCun's core concept is to shift from "Statistical Prediction" (guessing the next word, as LLM currently does) to "Objective-Driven AI." He believes AI must have goals and plan how to achieve them (Planning), which is a key differentiator from current chatbots.

The decision to establish offices in four major cities (Paris, New York, Montreal, Singapore) is a strategic move to attract world-class researchers. Singapore, in particular, is positioned as a gateway to Asia to connect with the high-performance manufacturing and computing ecosystem.

AMI Labs is expected to build upon LeCun's Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) research initiated at Meta. This technology allows AI to learn from videos and images, much like babies learn about the world, without relying solely on massive data input like in language training.

The $1 billion seed funding round reflects investors' growing saturation with traditional chatbot models and their willingness to invest heavily in approaches that promise "True AGI," or AI with true human-level intelligence.
