Windows 11 Shared Audio Gets Individual Volume Controls The Ultimate Dual-Headset Update.
Windows 11 Shared Audio: Microsoft Enhances Dual-Headset Experience with Independent Volume Controls

Microsoft is significantly upgrading the Shared Audio feature on Windows 11, making it more intuitive and flexible for users who want to stream audio to two sets of headphones simultaneously. Whether it's watching a movie with a friend or listening to music in a shared space, the latest update focuses on a more personalized listening experience.

Individual Volume Control: A Game Changer

The standout improvement in this update is the introduction of independent volume sliders for each device. Unlike earlier test versions where both headsets were locked to the same volume level, users can now adjust their own loudness preferences. For those who still prefer a synchronized experience, a master volume control remains available to adjust both devices at once.

Streamlined UI and Faster Access

To reduce confusion when managing multiple peripherals, Microsoft has added a dedicated Shared Audio status icon to the System Tray. This provides immediate visual confirmation when the feature is active and allows users to jump directly into settings with a single click, bypassing several layers of menus.

Expanded Hardware Compatibility

Microsoft is broadening the list of supported hardware to include premium models such as:

  • Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 & Buds 4 Pro

  • Sony WF-1000XM6

  • Xbox Wireless Headset

Currently, the feature is available to Windows Insiders and is limited to devices supporting Bluetooth LE Audio, specifically within the Copilot+ PC ecosystem. Alongside Shared Audio, Microsoft has also integrated MIDI 2.0 support, signaling a serious commitment to elevating the overall audio experience on Windows 11.

The heart of this feature is Auracast™ technology with Bluetooth LE Audio. It not only enables audio sharing but is also significantly more energy-efficient than traditional Bluetooth and offers more stable audio quality (low latency), setting a new standard for mobile and computer applications.

The inclusion of MIDI 2.0 alongside audio upgrades reflects Microsoft's reclaiming of its place from macOS among musicians and content creators. MIDI 2.0 offers up to 1,000 times higher audio control resolution than its predecessor, making Windows a more powerful platform for professional music production.

Limiting this feature to the Copilot+ PC clearly signals Microsoft's desire to highlight the value of new hardware featuring the latest NPU chips and connectivity modules, which will boost high-end computer sales this year.

This feature caters to remote work and travel lifestyles, such as watching a movie together on an airplane or in a cafe, providing the privacy of a movie theater for two using a single notebook.
