The Future of Filmmaking Netflix Enlists Ben Affleck to Bridge AI and Human Creativity.
Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Startup "InterPositive" to Revolutionize Post-Production

Netflix has officially announced the acquisition of InterPositive, a cutting-edge AI startup focused on motion picture production. Founded by Academy Award-winning actor and director Ben Affleck, the deal's financial terms remain undisclosed. As part of the transition, InterPositive’s entire team of engineers and researchers will join Netflix, while Affleck will take on a role as a Senior Advisor.

Human-Centric AI in Filmmaking

Founded in 2022, InterPositive has operated largely in "stealth mode" without public product launches. Affleck, long a proponent of integrating AI into the cinematic process, describes the startup’s mission as empowering human creativity rather than replacing it. The technology focuses on advanced post-production tools, including:

  • Missing Scene Generation: Seamlessly filling in gaps in a sequence.

  • Environment Expansion: Digitally extending or modifying backgrounds.

  • Dynamic Lighting Correction: Enhancing visual consistency across shots.

Localized Learning and Partner Integration

Unlike general-purpose AI, InterPositive’s models utilize project-specific datasets, learning from the unique visual style and assets of a particular production. Netflix plans to roll out this technology to its content partners, providing creators with powerful tools to streamline workflows and reduce production costs.

One of the biggest expenses in filmmaking is reshoots. InterPositive's technology, capable of adding scenes or adjusting lighting to a realistic level, will save Netflix a tremendous amount of money and reduce post-production time from months to just a few weeks.

Ben Affleck's founding is a key selling point. His background as a creative professional guarantees that this AI is designed to be a "director's assistant," not a tool to destroy filmmaking careers. This will help alleviate resistance from Hollywood labor unions concerned about the use of AI.

The "project-specific learning" system means the AI won't mix styles from other films. For example, if working on a film noir, the AI will learn only the lighting tone of that project, resulting in a non-generic AI look while accurately retaining the director's signature.

This move puts Netflix a step ahead of competitors like Disney+ and Max, positioning itself as both a "production studio" and a "technology company" in one.
