Google Slashes Play Store Fees and Settles Global Legal Battle with Epic Games

Google has officially announced a major overhaul of its Google Play Store fee structure, moving away from the long-standing 30% standard. The new model, while more complex, effectively reduces the total take-rate to between 20% and 25% for most developers.

The Decoupled Fee Structure

The new system splits costs into two distinct categories:

  1. Service Fee: Charged for using the Google Play platform. This is set at 15% for new acquisitions (first-time purchases) and 20% for existing customers.

  2. Billing Fee: This is the cost for processing payments through Google. However, Google is no longer mandating its own system. Under the "Billing Choice" policy, developers can opt for third-party payment processors. In the U.S., UK, and Europe, Google’s own billing fee is capped at 5%.

Implementation Timeline

  • June 30, 2026: Effective for the U.S., UK, and European markets.

  • September 30, 2027: Global rollout for all other regions.

Opening the Gates: Registered App Stores

In a move to foster competition, Google is simplifying the installation of alternative app stores (such as the Epic Games Store) through the "Registered App Stores" program. Providers must register with Google to ensure platform security; in exchange, their stores will enjoy a seamless installation experience that bypasses the friction and security warnings typically associated with traditional "sideloading."

The End of an Era: Settlement with Epic Games

This policy shift marks the final chapter in the high-profile legal battle with Epic Games. Following through on the negotiation success announced in late 2025, Google confirmed today that all global litigation with Epic has officially been settled, signaling a new era of open-platform cooperation.

Google's permission to use "Billing Choice" means developers can directly inform customers in their apps that "paying through our website will be cheaper," something previously prohibited. This change will allow companies like Spotify and Netflix to maintain significantly higher profits.

The "Registered App Stores" project is a major turning point. Previously, sideloading apps required bypassing several daunting warnings. This new system will make alternative stores appear as trustworthy as the Play Store in the eyes of the general public.

Google's moves in 2026 will put immense pressure on Apple to lower its App Store fees, as both companies are under intense scrutiny from digital legislation (such as DMA in Europe).

We may see major gamers like EA, Ubisoft, or even Amazon launch their own dedicated Android stores, making the Android ecosystem more similar to the PC world with multiple launchers.
