Google and Samsung Team Up Android 16 Officially Transforms Your Phone into a Desktop.
The long-awaited dream of a seamless mobile-to-desktop transition is finally a reality. With the release of Android 16 QPR3, Google has officially introduced its native "Desktop Mode" Developed in close collaboration with Samsung, this feature functions similarly to Samsung DeX but is now integrated directly into the Android core, providing a standardized experience across flagship devices.
The Desktop Windowing Environment
Technically referred to as the "Desktop Windowing Environment," this feature allows Android apps to run in freeform, resizable windows. While a similar functionality existed for large-screen devices like tablets, this update optimizes the experience for external monitors:
Smartphone Connection: When connecting a phone to a monitor, users are greeted with a dedicated desktop interface on the external display.
Tablet Synergy: For tablets, the experience scales even further, offering a dual-desktop setup where users can seamlessly drag and drop windows across both the tablet screen and the monitor.
Hardware Compatibility
The feature is rolling out for the latest flagship hardware, including:
Google: Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and the new Pixel 10 series.
Samsung: Galaxy S26, Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and the Tab S11 series.
Developer Focus: Large-Screen Optimization
To ensure apps look and feel native in this new environment, developers are encouraged to utilize the latest tools:
Jetpack WindowManager 1.5.0: Introduces new "Large" and "Extra-large" window classes.
Jetpack Navigation 3: Designed to help creators build UI flows that feel natural on expansive desktop-style displays.
The processing power of chips like the Tensor G5 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is more than enough. A stable Desktop Mode means office workers or students can carry just their phone and plug it into a docking station at their desk to work on documents or edit videos immediately, without needing a laptop.
Previously, each manufacturer (Samsung, Motorola, Huawei) developed their own desktop mode, causing some apps to malfunction. But Google's development at the OS level will encourage app developers worldwide to standardize their apps to support "Window Mode" (Universal App Experience).
The "Dual-Desktop" feature on tablets is a key highlight, transforming them into a powerful second screen—not just a mirror, but an independent workspace.
It's anticipated that Google will include Gemini AI optimized for multitasking, such as automatically summarizing data from one window and writing it to another, significantly boosting productivity.
