According to the latest insights from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple highly anticipated smart home display is finally ready for its debut. Despite being long-delayed due to setbacks in the development of the next-generation Siri, the tech giant has reportedly locked in a release window for September 2026.
The Siri Bottleneck
The core functionality of Apple’s smart home strategy relies heavily on voice control. The development of a more capable Siri has been plagued by delays, causing a domino effect on the hardware roadmap. Gurman notes that while a preliminary version of the new Siri is expected to arrive with iOS 26.5 mid-year, the smart home display will launch alongside iOS 27, which is anticipated to feature the fully realized, AI-driven Siri.
Product Hardware: Tabletop vs. Wall-Mounted
Previous reports suggest that Apple is developing two distinct versions of the display:
The Tabletop Model: Described as an iPad-like screen mounted on a speaker base, designed for counters or bedside tables.
The Wall-Mounted Model: A slim display focused on controlling smart home devices and displaying key glanceable information like weather, calendars, and security feeds.
The Domino Effect on Home Hardware
The wait for Siri's maturity has also pushed back other products in Apple’s home ecosystem. Updated versions of the Apple TV 4K and the HomePod have reportedly been sidelined until the software foundation is stable enough to support their new AI capabilities.
Rumors suggest Apple is developing a new operating system called homeOS specifically for these devices. It will combine the stability of tvOS with the intelligence of iPadOS to create an "always-on" and more energy-efficient display than a standard iPad.
This screen isn't just for turning off lights or adjusting the air conditioning; Apple intends it to be a "Family Command Center," using AI to analyze household behavior. For example, Siri could instantly summarize your schedule and traffic conditions when you walk past the screen in the morning, or alert you to strangers detected by a HomeKit camera with improved identification.
Apple entered this market much later than Amazon and Google. Apple's key to success will be "privacy," with all voice commands and visual data processed on-device, not on the cloud – a crucial selling point for devices intended for bedrooms or living rooms.
The screen is expected to include a U2 chip, allowing it to track the location of users with iPhones or Apple Watches within the home. As you approach the screen, it might enlarge the font or seamlessly transfer a FaceTime call from a mobile device to the screen.
