AWS Data Center in UAE Under Attack: Fire Outage at mec1-az2 Triggers Emergency Shutdown
On March 1, 2026, the AWS mec1-az2 data center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the target of a targeted attack. The strike resulted in a significant fire within the facility, forcing emergency responders to cut all external power and shut down backup generators to prevent further escalation and manage the blaze.
The Impact: Resilience vs. API Disruptions
While the physical infrastructure faced a direct hit, Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported that its Multi-AZ (Availability Zone) architecture successfully mitigated a total regional blackout. Customer workloads with Multi-AZ redundancy remained operational as they failed over to unaffected zones.
However, the attack caused a localized "Control Plane" failure. Several critical EC2 networking APIs experienced disruptions, preventing customers from modifying their infrastructure in that region. The affected APIs include:

Strategic Context
The AWS Middle East (UAE) region, which consists of three Availability Zones, was launched in 2022. AWS engineering teams are currently focused on stabilizing the remaining zones and restoring full API functionality.
The decision to cut off power and shut down generators (hard shutdown) is the highest priority measure in data centers. This is because fire suppression in server rooms typically uses inert gas systems, which are most effective when there is no heat buildup from machinery and electrical currents.
Even though customer workloads were running normally in other AZs, the failure of APIs like DescribeNetworkInterfaces meant that customers were temporarily unable to modify network infrastructure or implement automation (such as auto-scaling) during the incident. This is an example of a "control plane failure," where the primary system remains operational but the control system is ineffective.
The Middle East, particularly the UAE, is a strategic hub for subsea cables connecting Europe and Asia. This incident therefore presents a significant test of trust in the region's digital infrastructure, which is striving to reduce its dependence on oil and shift towards a technology-based economy.
The decision to immediately cut off the power and shut down the generator (Manual Kill Switch) demonstrates that the severity of the attack was at a level that the automated system could not handle, requiring human intervention to secure the remaining server data.
