LinkedIn Combats Low-Quality "AI Slop" with New User Reporting Feature Amid Rising Automated Posts
Following recent industry reports revealing that up to one-fourth of all content on LinkedIn is generated by artificial intelligence, the professional networking platform has announced a new initiative to curb low-quality automated posts.
Hari Srinivasan, Head of Product at LinkedIn, explained that while automated algorithms already filter low-quality content behind the scenes, LinkedIn is granting members greater direct control over their feeds by introducing a dedicated feedback button: "Seems like AI slop."
Srinivasan emphasized the critical distinction between using AI as a supportive writing tool versus deploying it to generate low-effort, unoriginal posts. LinkedIn clarified that it does not treat AI-generated content as inherently problematic or ban-worthy; rather, its goal is to identify and suppress spammy, low-value "AI slop" that degrades feed quality.
Addressing why LinkedIn sees a higher concentration of AI-generated content compared to other social platforms, company leadership suggested that members feel more comfortable leveraging AI in a professional context. Additionally, LinkedIn’s native text-enhancement tools embedded directly in the post editor actively encourage users to refine their drafts using generative AI before publishing.
The origin and meaning of "AI slop," a phrase that quickly became a shortened term in the tech world for repetitive and artificially crafted content designed to trick engagement algorithms, is evident on LinkedIn. This manifests as clichéd inspirational stories, empty business jargon, and generic advice posts lacking genuine personal understanding or authentic human experience.
The conflict between promoting AI tools while controlling AI content highlights the delicate balance LinkedIn strives to maintain. On the one hand, LinkedIn integrates Microsoft-powered AI writing assistants directly into its post creation interface and premium subscription packages. On the other hand, the conflict arising from artificially crafted "engagement bait" threatens feed quality and user retention. Empowering users to signal "slop" allows LinkedIn to fine-tune its recommendation algorithms without disabling its native AI optimization tools.
This policy shift reflects a broader trend across social media platforms, a response to "AI weariness," as AI-generated content reduces the cost of content production to near zero. Authentic human experience, original research, and genuine personal stories become far more valuable in professional networks.
