Microsoft Azure Signs Major Deal for AMD Helios AI Server Racks Launching H2 2026.
In a major infrastructure expansion deal, AMD has announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft to deploy its flagship AMD Helios AI server racks across Azure data centers at a massive scale. The high-density hardware deployment is specifically engineered to power next-generation, frontier AI models. Microsoft plans to utilize the infrastructure for both internal AI workloads and to offer compute capacity to enterprise Azure cloud clients starting in the second half of 2026.
The deal cements the AMD Helios architecture as a core pillar in the hyperscale AI hardware ecosystem. Microsoft joins an elite lineup of tech industry leaders including Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle that have previously committed to integrating Helios server racks into their global data center footprints.
In tandem with the Helios deployment, Microsoft disclosed plans to introduce new Azure Virtual Machine (VM) instances powered by AMD’s 6th Gen EPYC "Venice" CPUs:
Azure HDv2: Tailored specifically for complex Agentic AI workloads requiring high-memory bandwidth and multi-step reasoning capabilities.
Azure HXv2: Optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) and semiconductor design (EDA) simulations.
The competition between AMD and NVIDIA, and Microsoft's large-scale purchase of AMD Helios for Azure, demonstrates how hyperscalers are accelerating supply chain diversification to reduce their reliance on NVIDIA's Grace Blackwell/Rubin chips. Having an alternative like Helios allows Azure to better control costs per TFLOPS.
The 6th Gen EPYC processor (Codenamed "Venice") is designed on the Zen 6 architecture, significantly increasing memory bandwidth and core count. Agentic AI models require CPU processing to manage context and prioritize tasks in conjunction with the GPU; the Venice chip effectively reduces this bottleneck.
Azure HXv2 instances focused on EDA (Electronic Design Automation) – the creation of new AI chips requires massive computing power for simulating transistor circuits. Microsoft's provision of servers specifically for semiconductor design companies addresses this need. This will help attract more Fabless Chip Designers (chip designers who don't have their own manufacturing facilities) to use Azure's cloud system.
