Samsung Challenges Apple Card with Launch of 'Samsung Galaxy Card' in the US

Samsung Electronics has officially entered the co-branded credit card arena in the United States, launching the Samsung Galaxy Card in partnership with Barclays as the issuing bank and running on the Visa payment network.

Engineered for seamless integration with the Samsung Wallet application across Galaxy smartphones and wearables, the card carries no annual fees and features a tiered cash-back rewards structure designed to incentivize direct hardware and service purchases within the Samsung ecosystem:

  • 5% Cash Back: Direct purchases of Samsung hardware, accessories, and official services.

  • 3% Cash Back: Purchases executed via Samsung Wallet (contactless NFC or online checkout).

  • 2% Cash Back: Popular digital streaming subscriptions.

  • 1% Cash Back: All other standard everyday card purchases.

Ecosystem Rivalry: Samsung Galaxy Card vs. Apple Card

The launch directly challenges Apple’s proprietary financial offering, the Apple Card, which remains exclusive to the US market. While Samsung teamed up with Barclays and Visa, Apple operates its card program alongside JPMorgan Chase and Mastercard.

In terms of rewards, Apple Card offers up to 3% cash back on Apple purchases and select partner merchants, 2% on transactions made using Apple Pay, and 1% on traditional physical card swipes—positioning Samsung's 5% flagship direct tier as a more aggressive hardware incentive.

The true purpose of credit cards, according to smartphone manufacturers, isn't primarily to collect interest, but rather as a hardware retention tool. Offering cashback of up to 5% on Samsung products or 3% for contactless payments via Samsung Wallet will encourage users to stick with other brands, as the points or cashback are tied to the device's payment system.

Barklays' partnership with Barclays and Visa demonstrates their aggressive expansion of their North American retail customer portfolio. Acquiring a giant like Samsung will allow Barclays to immediately integrate tens of millions of Android Galaxy smartphone users in the US into their banking system, competing head-to-head with JPMorgan Chase's Apple Card deal.

The 3% cashback structure when paying via Samsung Wallet (compared to Apple's 2% via Apple Pay) is highly attractive. Offering 3% for contactless payments via a typical digital wallet will significantly accelerate the shift of Americans towards mobile contactless payments instead of traditional plastic cards.
