Reddit CEO Warns Google AI Overviews Are Disrupting the Open Web Despite Strong Q2 2026 Earnings.
Following Reddit’s second-quarter 2026 financial report, CEO Steve Huffman addressed the growing pressure exerted by search engines on open-web publishers. Huffman revealed that Google's aggressive push into AI Overviews which synthesizes search results directly on the Google Search homepage has led to a noticeable decline in referral traffic directed to Reddit threads.
Huffman noted that for decades, Google's traditional search architecture famously built around the foundational "10 blue links" served as the primary economic engine of the open web. While search algorithms periodically evolved, that core index-and-referral mechanism remained intact. In contrast, Huffman argued that Google's new AI Overviews fail to offer a positive alternative for content creators, fundamentally disrupting the web's ecosystem and forcing Reddit to pivot toward driving direct user traffic to its own platforms.
Despite search referral headwinds, Reddit delivered stellar financial performance for Q2 2026. Total revenue surged 61% year-over-year to $805 million, while net income reached $253 million, demonstrating strong monetization across direct-sold advertising and platform engagement.
The evolving social contract between search engines and web publishers: Historically, web crawlers indexed content in exchange for referring traffic back to the original website. With Google's AI Overviews creating no-click summaries, users can respond to user needs within search interfaces without generating referring traffic—the very traffic platforms like Reddit use to monetize their advertising.
Reddit's dual relationship with Google highlights the paradoxical dynamics of Reddit's relationship with large tech companies. While Google's AI Overviews captures organic search traffic, Google pays Reddit tens of millions of dollars annually under a data licensing agreement to train its Gemini AI model on human discussion threads. Steve Huffman's critique highlights the very fine line Reddit must walk between monetizing data to train its AI while battling for user traffic.
As referring from external searches becomes less reliable, Reddit invests heavily in converting anonymous site visitors into logged-in mobile app users, refining native subreddits, and optimizing user feeds. And upgrades to internal search algorithms ensure that once users enter the Reddit ecosystem, they remain directly engaged on the platform without relying on Google as a gateway to discovery.
