GPT-5.5 and Codex Unleashed as Microsoft Exclusivity Dissolves.

GPT-5.5 and Codex Unleashed as Microsoft Exclusivity Dissolves.
OpenAI Launches GPT-5.4, GPT-5.5, and Codex on Amazon Bedrock Following Historic Microsoft Exclusivity Split

In a major structural shift that rearranges the global enterprise AI landscape, OpenAI has officially announced the general availability of its frontier models GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.5 alongside its Codex coding agent on Amazon Bedrock.

The rollout follows a high-stakes corporate realignment. Previously, OpenAI and Amazon attempted to orchestrate joint business ventures while maneuvering around strict, multi-billion-dollar exclusivity clauses with Microsoft. However, Microsoft and OpenAI recently restructured their partnership terms, officially terminating Azure’s exclusive cloud distribution rights. This decoupling frees OpenAI to deploy its native, un-modified models directly onto competing hyperscale cloud infrastructures.

Native Integration: Seamless Codex Deployment on AWS

For enterprise developers using OpenAI Codex, the AI-powered software development agent now features native architectural compatibility with AWS infrastructure. Software engineering teams can instantly reconfigure their backend provider settings to route inference directly through Amazon Bedrock.

By leveraging the native Amazon Bedrock Responses API, developers can authenticate utilizing existing AWS SDK credentials or API keys, bypassing previous procurement bottlenecks and consolidating infrastructure spending under their pre-existing AWS cloud financial commitments.

Expanding the AWS Footprint: Daybreak and Codex Security

OpenAI has confirmed its long-term roadmap involves continuously expanding its managed service offerings on AWS. Looking forward, the artificial intelligence firm intends to port its specialized cybersecurity ecosystem onto Bedrock, including:

  • OpenAI Daybreak: A comprehensive initiative built to help cyber defenders identify infrastructure risks and validate patches earlier in the development lifecycle.

  • Codex Security: An agentic secure-code-review system designed to automatically run vulnerability scans, compile threat models, and remediate security risks prior to production deployment.

The most significant turning point was OpenAI's break free from its exclusive agreement with Microsoft Azure (which officially ended at the end of April). Leaked internal OpenAI memos indicated that the previous Azure exclusive "limited its ability to reach enterprise customers," as many large companies already had their core infrastructure and data residency on AWS. This break free led to the slogan "Meet enterprise customers where they are," which was overwhelmingly well-received by the enterprise sector, resulting in record-breaking inbound demand.

The Codex's support for Amazon Bedrock, powered by GPT-5.5, is a major leap forward in DevOps. It's important to understand that GPT-5.5 is designed specifically for agentic workflows. It can remember the context of massive code across repositories, is tolerant of ambiguous failures, and automatically modify interconnected code. The shift to a pay-per-to-use pricing model is also a key development. The pay-per-token (P/P) model with no seat license fees on Bedrock will make it much easier for large organizations to integrate it into their CI/CD pipelines.

Another crucial point to watch is that OpenAI's entry into Bedrock will inevitably create discomfort for Anthropic (developer Claude), as Amazon is a major partner and investor in Anthropic (with a total investment of over $25 billion). Amazon's opening the door for its main competitor, OpenAI, to sell its products on the Bedrock platform with new features like Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents reflects Amazon's (CEO Andy Jassy's) strategy of becoming a "department store for the AI market," offering customers the best models while primarily generating revenue from selling cloud computing power and custom chips like Trainium.
