Microsoft Unveils ‘Autopilots’: Always-On AI Agents Headlined by OpenClaw-Powered 'Microsoft Scout'

Microsoft has introduced a brand-new category of always-on, autonomous artificial intelligence agents, natively branding this class of background assistants as "Autopilots"

The first flagship agent launched under this umbrella is Microsoft Scout, designed to operate as a user's dedicated personal secretary or "chief assistant" within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Unlike reactive AI chatbots that only respond when directly prompted, Scout runs continuously in the background to monitor incoming emails, chats, and calendar appointments. For instance, users can task Scout with autonomously flagging urgent deliverables or tracking communications directly from their managers. Once an action is required, Scout interacts with the user like a colleague inside Microsoft Teams, where users can simply reply with conversational commands instructing Scout to draft emails or transfer files to other team members.

Under the hood, Microsoft Scout is built upon OpenClaw, a highly popular open-source autonomous agent framework. Microsoft has heavily customized this architecture, hooking it into Work IQ Microsoft 365’s contextual data layer to give the agent a deep, real-time understanding of an individual's workflow and priorities. Microsoft emphasized that it has hardened the open-source codebase with enterprise-grade security and governance controls, while actively contributing these policy compliance patches back upstream to the open-source OpenClaw community.

The biggest risk with modern open-source agent bots is their 24/7 access to execute code and manage systems. If an error occurs, the bot could inadvertently delete sensitive files or leak data. To address this, Microsoft has created a security system where each Autopilot has its own unique "Entra Identity," or scoped credentials, within the organization. This allows system administrators to accurately audit bot activity through Microsoft Intune, preventing bots from acting outside their assigned scope.
