Hetzner Shocks the Market with Cloud Price Hikes Up to 200% to Combat Hardware Inflation.
Cloud Price Shock: Hetzner Announces Massive Price Hikes Up to 200% Amid Global Hardware Inflation

The relentless inflation hitting the global technology hardware sector has officially breached the cloud computing market. Leading European cloud infrastructure provider Hetzner has announced a sweeping price restructure across its virtual private server (VPS) and cloud instances, signaling price hikes ranging from 30% to a staggering 200%, heavily dependent on regional data center deployment.

The pricing adjustments vary drastically by tier and geographical location:

  • Entry-Level Instances (Europe): The budget-friendly CX33 instance (4 vCPU cores, 8GB RAM, 80GB SSD storage) deployed in European regions will see its monthly rate climb from €6.49 to €8.49, marking a baseline 30% increase.

  • High-Tier Instances (United States): Conversely, North American deployments face the heaviest corrections. The compute-heavy CPX51 instance (16 vCPU cores, 32GB RAM, 360GB SSD storage) hosted in U.S. data centers will experience a monumental 200% surge, with prices skyrocketing from €77.99 to €237.99 per month.

In an effort to mitigate mass customer churn, Hetzner is adopting a grandfathered billing strategy. The aggressive new pricing model will apply strictly to newly provisioned servers. Legacy instances currently running in production environments will retain their historical lower pricing tiers indefinitely.

However, Hetzner explicitly warned that any future modifications to these legacy environments such as scaling, resizing, or upgrading instance specs will instantly trigger a migration to the updated, costlier billing matrix.

The reason Hetzner's US servers (such as those in Ashburn and Hillsboro data centers) are significantly more expensive than their European counterparts is due to soaring colocation costs and energy costs in North America, driven by intense competition for electricity resources from major AI mining companies. Furthermore, Hetzner's proprietary European data centers allow it to better control pricing and operational costs (OpEx) in Europe compared to the US.

A key underlying factor in this global price increase is Hetzner's own hardware procurement policy. Hetzner is typically known for using premium consumer-grade hardware and custom-built servers to keep cloud pricing low. However, as the supply chain for processing chips (such as the latest AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon), DDR5 RAM, and rack space has become exponentially more expensive, hardware refreshes are no longer feasible at the same cost. This forces budget IaaS providers to pass these costs on to users.

This strategy of allowing older equipment to pay the same price is a key factor. "But new machines come at a new price" is a very clever psychological tactic (customer retention trick). It makes current users regret leaving and try to stubbornly continue running their systems on the old servers for as long as possible, even if the applications grow and require more RAM. They know that if they "resize," the bill will immediately jump by 30-200%. This effectively reduces Hetzner's churn rate of older servers, while the company still profits significantly from new customers who have no other choice.
