Ubisoft Co-Founder Claude Guillemot Tragically Passes Away in Private Plane Crash in France

Claude Guillemot, one of the five foundational brothers who built the global video game powerhouse Ubisoft, has tragically passed away following a private plane crash in western France. He was 69 years old.

French media outlet Ouest-France reported that the incident involved a Cessna 421 aircraft, which went down near the coastal town of La Baule-Escoublac in the Loire-Atlantic region. The crash resulted in two fatalities: Claude Guillemot and the aircraft's owner, who was piloting the plane. Local authorities have launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the aviation accident.

The five Guillemot brothers Christian, Claude, Gérard, Michel, and Yves originally established their entrepreneurial roots in Brittany, France, running a mail-order computer hardware and software distribution business. Recognizing the exponential potential of interactive entertainment, they pivoted directly into video game publishing and development, officially incorporating Ubisoft in 1986.

While his brother Yves Guillemot assumed the role of long-standing CEO of Ubisoft, Claude concentrated his executive vision on hardware innovation. He served as the leader of Guillemot Corporation, a publicly traded corporate entity that owns world-renowned gaming peripheral brands, including Thrustmaster (premier racing wheels and flight joysticks), Hercules (audio devices), and Djuced (digital DJ software).

The Legacy of the Guillemot Brothers at a Glance

  • 1980s Beginning: Started as a mail-order computer hardware distributor in rural Brittany.

  • 1986 Milestone: Co-founded Ubisoft, growing it into one of the largest independent video game publishers globally.

  • The Hardware Frontier: Claude takes leadership of Guillemot Corporation, establishing Thrustmaster as an industry standard for simulation racing and flight software gear.

While Yves Guillemot is best known in mainstream media as the head of Ubisoft (creator of Assassin's Creed and Far Cry), Claude Guillemot was the man behind the realism of hardware gaming. Under his leadership, the Thrustmaster brand was the industry's gold standard for racing and flight simulator games worldwide for decades. His equipment was endorsed and co-developed by global brands like Ferrari and the US military. His passing is therefore a huge loss to both the software and hardware IT industries.

The "Guillemot Brothers' Unity": In the global gaming industry, the five brothers were renowned for their collective strength in protecting the company. Their family weathered its biggest crisis between 2015 and 2018 when the French media giant Vivendi attempted a hostile takeover. At that time, Claude and his brothers pooled their resources and assets to buy back shares, successfully preserving Ubisoft's creative freedom. This story reflects that Claude was not just an ordinary co-founder, but a crucial "shield" that has allowed this French company to remain independent to this day.

While the loss of Dr. Claude caused immense grief to the Guillemot family, there was no disruption to corporate governance. Guillemot Corporation and Ubisoft have separate management structures and executive committees to efficiently manage the back-end systems. The direction forward is to pass the baton to the next generation of the family to continue Claude's legacy of hardware innovation.
