Apple Vision Pro Executive Defects to OpenAI Hardware Division Amid Jony Ive Alliance.
Apple Hardware Veteran Paul Meade Ported to Exit for OpenAI, Set to Spearhead Next-Gen AI Hardware Initiatives

In a major talent poaching development shaking the foundational pillars of Silicon Valley consumer tech, Bloomberg Mark Gurman reports that Paul Meade, a high-ranking Apple executive driving the core development of the Vision Pro headset and futuristic smart glasses initiatives, is preparing to exit the Cupertino giant next week. According to sources familiar with the matter, Meade’s next destination is OpenAI, where he will take on a pivotal leadership role within the artificial intelligence laboratory's rapidly expanding hardware division.

Inside sources indicate that Meade will oversee the technical execution and deployment of OpenAI’s upcoming ecosystem of AI-native hardware devices. While exact product specifications and form factors remain heavily classified, the move signals OpenAI’s aggressive transition from an AI software and foundational model provider into a tangible consumer hardware player.

Meade's recruitment marks another strategic layer in OpenAI’s hardware roadmap. The AI pioneer already commands a powerful hardware alliance with Sir Jony Ive, Apple’s legendary former Chief Design Officer. This operation was structurally solidified last year following OpenAI's acquisition of io, a specialized design firm led by Ive. Notably, this stealth hardware team has evolved into a premier destination for ex-Apple design veterans, having already absorbed prominent engineering figures including Tang Tan and Evans Hankey.

OpenAI Hardware Division Executive Snapshot

  • The Latest Addition: Paul Meade (Former Apple Executive - Head of Vision Pro & Smart Glasses Projects).

  • The Design Anchor: Sir Jony Ive (Former Apple Chief Design Officer, leading via the 'io' acquisition framework).

  • Key Design Veterans in the Team:

    • Tang Tan (Former Apple VP of Product Design)

    • Evans Hankey (Former Apple Head of Industrial Design)

  • Strategic Objective: Building a proprietary suite of AI-first consumer electronics to bypass traditional smartphone app store distributions.

The reunion of Steve Jobs' former right-hand man and legendary Apple team members crossing over to the new power bloc of OpenAI, coupled with the departure of Paul Meade, who oversaw Apple's most cutting-edge project, Vision Pro, highlights the world's top engineers' growing awareness that "the next generation of hardware won't be the same old smartphones or glasses," but rather devices built with AI at its core from the outset (AI-Native). This influx of personnel is transforming OpenAI into "one of the most powerful hardware design studios in the world," almost mirroring Apple's past successes.

Paul Meade's experience lies in spatial computing and sensor systems that detect human behavior, stemming from his work on smart glasses. His joining OpenAI is likely linked to the development of devices relying on smart cameras and real-time voice interaction, such as a new breed of AI glasses that lacks the bulky screens of Vision Pro but uses AI to subtly listen, observe, and answer questions naturally through voice. It could also extend to the development of sensor systems to control humanoid robots (Embodied AI), a project OpenAI is currently funding. Meade's experience managing complex hardware projects will help transform OpenAI's lab ideas into mass-produced products on a million-unit scale.

Currently, OpenAI relies heavily on Apple's iOS and Google's Android apps, placing them under the regulations, rules, and 30% revenue sharing requirements of the existing App Store ecosystem. The move to form their own hardware team, led by Paul Meade and Jony Ive, is an attempt by Sam Altman (OpenAI's CEO) to create a "primary gateway" to access AI without intermediaries. If successful, this device could become a new disruptive force in the IT industry, potentially transforming smartphone sales in the future.
