Anthropic Launches Claude Tag Leveraging Opus 4.8 to Power 65% of Internal Workflows.
Anthropic Launches 'Claude Tag' Powered by Opus 4.8: Transforming Slack Channels into Autonomous AI Workspaces

Anthropic has officially introduced Claude Tag, an advanced enterprise collaboration tool driven by its state-of-the-art Claude 4.8 Opus foundational model. Debuting natively within Slack, the tool elevates the standard chatbot dynamic into an integrated team member. By simply mentioning @Claude in any shared channel or thread, teams can delegate complex multi-step workflows, authorizing the AI agent to access designated internal data silos to retrieve information, synthesize reports, and execute strategic project planning.

According to Anthropic, the framework underwent rigorous internal dogfooding before public release, yielding jaw-dropping internal engineering metrics. Most notably, 65% of Anthropic's own production code is currently generated directly via @Claude tags inside internal Slack channels. Beyond software engineering, the deployment has rapidly expanded across other corporate verticals, including product metrics analytics, customer support escalation management, and automated code debugging.

Claude Tag is engineered to completely phase out and replace the legacy Claude in Slack application, introducing massive architectural upgrades:

  • True Multi-User Conversations: Claude can now naturally converse with multiple team members simultaneously within a single thread, understanding shifting context from different speakers.

  • Persistent Contextual Memory: The agent accumulates and retains knowledge from historical queries over time, removing the friction of repeating parameters or re-uploading context.

  • Asynchronous Background Execution: Claude can now process heavy background compute tasks autonomously. Teams can drop a complex data mandate into a thread and continue working while Claude compiles the solution in the background.

Availability Notice: Claude Tag launches today in an Experimental Beta phase for Claude Enterprise and Team subscription tiers. Workspace administrators must manually grant access permissions and configure structural API spending limits before deployment.

Anthropic's claim that 65% of the company's code is written via tagging @Claude on Slack doesn't mean AI is taking over programmers' jobs, but rather reflects the era of "Chat-Driven Development." Previously, software engineers had to switch contexts, leaving the workspace to open their IDE to write code and test for bugs. Embedding Opus 4.8 in a central chat window allows development teams to throw code snippets into a group chat, and then have Claude fix bugs or write new modules instantly, visible to everyone simultaneously. This dramatically increases time-to-market.

The Role of the Opus 4.8 Model: The biggest problem with older bot models was "morbid dementia." After long conversations or with multiple people asking questions, the bot would forget the beginning of a sentence and become confused about context. However, in the Claude Tag version running on Opus 4.8, the system has been upgraded with Persistent Memory, allowing Claude to retrieve past conversation history in a chat and process it alongside a central document file. This eliminates user fatigue caused by repetitive command input.

The Asynchronous Work feature, previously requiring users to sit and wait for the AI to finish typing, has been changed in Claude Tag to be more human-like. You can type a complex task at 9 AM, such as "@Claude, please retrieve the raw sales log data from last month, analyze the cause of the system crash, and write a summary report." Then you can close the screen and attend a meeting. When Claude finishes its backend work (which may require some time for large-scale processing), it will tag you back in the chat with the complete report. This marks the beginning of the transformation of AI from an "interactive tool" to a "personal employee with personal responsibilities" in modern organizational structures.
