Microsoft Unveils 'Project Solara': A Unified Chip-to-Cloud Platform Blueprinting the Next Generation of Agentic AI Hardware

Microsoft has officially launched Project Solara, a foundational software platform designed specifically for a new wave of Internet of Things (IoT) hardware emerging in the Agentic AI era devices that extend far beyond traditional personal computers and smartphones.

To demonstrate the platform's practical applications, Microsoft showcased several physical enterprise prototypes. These include a smart display powered by MediaTek silicon and an intelligent employee smart badge equipped with a camera and miniature display, driven by a Qualcomm processor.

Microsoft explained that the rise of autonomous AI agents will inevitably lead to an explosion of specialized consumer and enterprise devices acting as ubiquitous personal assistants. However, the current hardware market suffers from severe fragmentation, lacking a unified software ecosystem capable of bridging multiple devices into a continuous, seamless user experience. Project Solara solves this industry bottleneck by delivering a comprehensive chip-to-cloud platform that standardizes everything from low-level silicon control to cloud-native orchestrations.

The core operating system powering Project Solara is the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP), an enterprise-grade OS built upon the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) framework. To ensure corporate readiness, MDEP deeply integrates Microsoft’s standard security and infrastructure management suites, including Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.

Furthermore, the platform provides robust identity governance through Windows Hello for Business with full biometric authentication support. Devices running MDEP will also benefit from automated software deployment via Microsoft's cloud-delivery pipelines, guaranteeing enterprise lifecycle and long-term security patching support.

From a user experience standpoint, Project Solara introduces a Just-In-Time (JIT) User Interface, an always-ready interactive layer optimized for immediate voice and visual collaboration with multiple cloud-based AI agents simultaneously. The platform is inherently extensible, enabling enterprises to hook their proprietary, custom-built internal AI agents directly into the system. It also natively syncs with Microsoft's foundational enterprise suites, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Windows 365, and WorkIQ.

Currently, Project Solara hardware remains in the prototype stage. Microsoft is actively pilot-testing the platform’s real-world workflows with select fortune 500 enterprises, including AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Health, Levi’s, and Target. Following this initial testing phase, Microsoft plans to collaborate with global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to commercialize these standardized AI-driven devices for businesses across various industries.

 

Microsoft's choice to use the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP), instead of the Windows IoT core, stems from the diverse range of ARM architecture chips currently available in the IoT market. Choosing AOSP allows Microsoft to immediately leverage hardware drivers and save time collaborating with major chip manufacturers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. Microsoft simply "surgically" removes all Google Services (GMS) and replaces them with its own enterprise-grade security systems (Entra ID, Intune), resulting in a Microsoft operating system ready to run rapidly on virtually any chip on the market.

The Just-In-Time (JIT) interface model represents a new philosophy for AI hardware design. While typical devices are app-centric, requiring users to manually open an app, devices in the Solara project are intent-centric, using AI to constantly observe user context through sensors, cameras, or voice. The smart display or smart badge "creates a temporary UI based on specific situations" (Just-In-Time) when the user needs it, such as displaying a short map when the AI ​​detects the user is lost. Or, open the document approval tab when an urgent email from your boss comes in through the WorkIQ system, without needing a traditional home screen or app icon anymore.
