Uber Caps AI Coding Budgets at $1,500 a Month After Burning Through Annual Funds by April.
Uber has officially announced a strict budget cap on its AI-assisted programming tools, limiting expenditure to $1,500 per month per engineer. The ride-hailing and technology giant utilizes a diverse suite of AI coding solutions across its development workflows, including Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenAI's Codex. Under the newly implemented policy, these budget limitations will be granularly enforced and segregated between each individual development tool.
To maintain operational transparency, software engineers will be able to track their real-time token consumption and expenditures through a centralized corporate dashboard. However, the company has left room for flexibility, allowing developers to request special quota extensions for high-priority or resource-intensive projects. An Uber spokesperson defended the decision, stating that establishing budgetary guardrails is a standard industry practice aimed at fostering the responsible and sustainable use of artificial intelligence.
The fiscal restriction follows a dramatic spike in internal usage. Uber’s Chief Technology Officer, Praveen Neppalli Naga, recently disclosed that the company completely exhausted its annual AI budget by April. The rapid deficit was driven by Uber’s global workforce of 5,000 software engineers, who consumed vast quantities of API tokens at a rate far exceeding the company's initial projections.
With the median salary of an Uber engineer standing at approximately $330,000, this newly imposed AI budget translates to an annual infrastructure cost of $18,000 to $54,000 per developer. This represents a significant 5.45% to 16.36% of an engineer's base salary. The massive overhead raises a critical industry question regarding the actual Return on Investment (ROI) of AI developer tools. Analysts note that if these AI assistants truly delivered the multi-fold productivity leaps often advertised, technology enterprises would likely be much more willing to absorb the soaring token costs rather than capping them.
Uber's AI budget depleted rapidly since the beginning of the year stems from a shift in user behavior. Previously, engineers used chat-based AI, but now they utilize agentic tools like Claude Code or Cursor, where agents can read entire code files, execute commands, and automatically write bug-fixing code. This process involves massive token consumption with every single code commit.
Calculating the budget relative to average salaries reflects a "cost-effectiveness" problem for big tech companies. With AI accounting for 5-16% of salaries, if it can't help engineers deliver work faster at the same or greater rate, this expense will become technical debt and an infrastructure burden instead of increasing profitability.
