Windows 11 Experimental Build Adds Advanced Touchpad Customization: Precision Scrolling and More

Microsoft has rolled out a new Experimental Build for Windows 11 Insider Preview, introducing highly requested features to the Touchpad settings. For the first time, users can fine-tune their navigation experience directly within the OS, reducing the reliance on third-party drivers or manufacturer-specific software.

New Precision Controls in Settings

The update brings several advanced options under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad:

  • Customizable Scroll/Zoom Speed: Users can now manually adjust the sensitivity of scrolling and zooming to match their workflow.

  • Automatic Scrolling: A new "hands-free" mode that allows the screen to continue scrolling without needing to lift or reposition your finger.

  • Accelerated Scrolling: This feature detects repeated flicking motions, exponentially increasing the scroll speed to help users navigate long documents or web pages faster.

  • Single-Finger Scrolling: A throwback to classic laptop navigation, users can now scroll by sliding a single finger along the left or right edge of the touchpad.

While many of these features have existed for years through specialized hardware drivers (such as Synaptics or ELAN), their integration into the native Windows Settings ensures a more consistent and seamless experience across all Windows 11 devices.

Single-finger scrolling is something older notebook users really miss (from the era before touchpads had good multi-touch capabilities). Microsoft bringing this feature back shows they prioritize accessibility and diverse user preferences, not just the enforcement of new gestures.

A major problem with Windows is that touchpads from different brands of notebooks don't work the same way. Bringing these features directly into the system settings allows users to have a consistent experience regardless of whether they switch from a Dell, HP, or Surface, eliminating the hassle of installing bloatware or unnecessary drivers from manufacturers.

The Accelerated and Automatic Scrolling features are designed to cater to data professionals and developers who need to read code or spreadsheets thousands of lines long. This reflects Windows 11's shift from being just an "easy-to-use" OS to a more "powerful" (power user-centric) OS.
