Asha Sharma Xbox Shake-up Leadership Hires and the Death of Console Copilot.
Asha Sharma, the newly appointed CEO of Xbox, continues her aggressive push to redefine the gaming giant’s strategic direction. In a recent update, Sharma announced a series of key leadership promotions and new hires aimed at injecting fresh energy into the Xbox executive team.
Trimming the Fat: The End of Copilot on Consoles
The more significant revelation, however, involves the removal of features that conflict with Xbox's "New Direction." Sharma confirmed the immediate removal of Copilot from the Xbox mobile app and announced a permanent halt to the development of Copilot for Consoles, a feature that had been in the works but was never officially completed.
Notably, Sharma remained silent regarding Copilot for Gaming on PC. Industry analysts suggest that this silence implies PC remains the sole platform where Microsoft’s AI assistant will continue its integration into the gaming experience.
The decision to remove Copilot from consoles reflects listening to player feedback. Many felt that the inclusion of AI in the console dashboard made the system cluttered and unnecessarily resource-intensive. Removing this feature demonstrates Sharma's desire for Xbox to refocus on true "Performance & Gaming Experience," rather than trying to cram AI everywhere.
Although Copilot has been removed from the mobile app, the new team leader's promotion clearly indicates that Sharma is preparing for the "Xbox Mobile Store." Making the mobile app cleaner and faster is key to attracting players from other platforms into the Xbox ecosystem.
The reason Copilot for Gaming is likely to continue only on PC is because PC users are more familiar with using AI assistance in both work and gaming (e.g., quest summaries or streaming setup assistance). Furthermore, PCs have better dedicated processing power to handle AI than consoles, which are primarily constrained for game graphics processing.
