Google Rebrands Fitbit as "Google Health": Introducing Gemini-Powered Wellness Coaching and Fitbit Air

In a major strategic shift, Google has officially rebranded its Fitbit app to Google Health. This transformation is accompanied by the launch of Google Health Premium, a subscription service that integrates a specialized version of Gemini to provide direct, personalized health insights. Unlike the standard Gemini app, this version is purpose-built to analyze Fitbit metrics and other medical history data provided by the user.

The Power of 60 Million Hours of Data

The new Google Health platform leverages over a dozen health metrics, including heart rate, sleep patterns, and stress levels. To ensure high accuracy, the AI model was trained on data from over 8 million users, totaling more than 60 million hours of diverse health signals. This allows the AI to offer hyper-personalized coaching that understands individual physiological nuances.

Meet the Fitbit Air: Simplicity at $99

Launching alongside the new app is the Fitbit Air, a minimalist tracker designed for 24/7 wear. Despite its sleek, screenless profile, it is packed with essential sensors, including:

  • Advanced Heart Rate Sensor

  • Accelerometer & Gyroscope

  • Skin Temperature Sensor

  • Vibration Motor for alerts and haptics

The device boasts a 7-day battery life and can store up to 30 days of detailed data offline. The Fitbit Air is positioned as an accessible entry point into the Google Health ecosystem, priced at $99.

Premium Features and Availability

Google Health Premium is available for $9.99 per month, offering exclusive access to the Gemini Health Coach and advanced analytics. Note that the Premium service is currently rolling out in select countries only.

What's interesting is that Google has separated Gemini Health from the regular Gemini app. This is a privacy strategy to ensure that highly sensitive health data isn't mixed with general public model training, but is processed only within each user's "Secure Health Vault."

With over 60 million hours of data, Google isn't just telling you you're "not getting enough sleep," but this model is moving towards predictive analytics. For example, it could provide early warnings about potential illnesses (like the common cold) based on abnormal body temperature and heart rate variability (HRV) before you even realize it.

The rebranding to Google Health aims to connect all services. In the future, data from Fitbit Air could be integrated with data from Google Wallet (for purchasing health insurance) or Google Calendar (for scheduling rest periods when the AI detects you're overstressed), making Google truly the "center of your life."
