Instagram Ramps Up War on Reposted Content: New Algorithm to Boost Originality Across All Formats

Instagram has announced a major overhaul of its content ranking algorithm, expanding its crackdown on "reposted" content. Previously focused primarily on Reels, these new measures will now apply to static images and carousel albums as well.

The "Originality First" Framework

Under the new system, the algorithm is designed to significantly prioritize original creators. Accounts that frequently post unoriginal or "scraped" content will see a substantial decrease in their organic reach.

  • The 30-Day Recovery Window: Accounts flagged for unoriginality will have a 30-day period to adjust their content strategy. By consistently posting original work during this time, their account's reach and "ranking score" will gradually return to normal.

The Meme Exception: Context is King

Instagram acknowledges that certain content types, such as Memes, naturally involve reused images. To address this, the platform provided a clear distinction:

  • Original Content: If a user takes a viral image (e.g., the "Distracted Boyfriend" meme), adds unique edits, and provides a creative, descriptive caption, it is considered original work.

  • Unoriginal Content: Simply reposting the exact same image with a generic or non-descriptive caption will trigger a reach penalty.

Provisions for News and Licensed Media

For news organizations and publishers that utilize licensed footage or stock imagery, Instagram has implemented a specialized verification system. Content from these sources will still be categorized as "original," ensuring that legitimate reporting and professional media remain unaffected by the crackdown.

Currently, Instagram is facing the problem of "Aggregation Accounts," or accounts that repost clips/images from TikTok or other platforms to artificially inflate their follower counts. This update signals that "the era of copy-pasting is over." Instagram aims to attract genuine artists and photographers back to the platform after having their reach eroded by these image-stealing accounts for so long.

Technically, Instagram uses much more sophisticated Audio and Visual Fingerprinting technology. It can even detect images that have been cropped, altered in color, or filtered, proving the original source. Therefore, simply adding your own watermark over someone else's image can no longer fool this algorithm.

For business accounts or creators, the safest approach is to use "Original Perspectives." For example, instead of directly reposting product images from the original brand, users should photograph the product in a new context or create reviews in their own style. This not only prevents reduced reach but also builds stronger brand loyalty in the long run.
