Nintendo Switch 2 Goes Premium Global Price Hikes Confirmed Amid Market Shifts.
Nintendo has officially announced a worldwide price increase for its latest console, the Nintendo Switch 2. The company cited broad market conditions and a strategic re-evaluation of business trends as the primary drivers behind the move. Interestingly, this announcement coincided with Nintendo’s latest financial report, in which the company acknowledged that Switch 2 sales forecasts have been revised downward due to the higher price point.
Regional Price Adjustments
The price hikes vary by region and model, with Japan seeing the most significant impact:
Japan:
Switch 2: Increased from 49,980 JPY to 59,980 JPY (+20%).
Switch OLED: Increased from 37,980 JPY to 47,980 JPY (+26%).
Note: All console models in Japan will see price increases starting May 25, 2026.
United States: Switch 2 price rises from $449.99 to $499.99 (+11%).
Europe: Switch 2 price rises from €469.99 to €499.99 (+6%).
Note: International price hikes for the Switch 2 in the US, Canada, and Europe take effect September 1, 2026.
Beyond Hardware: Services and Legacy Products
The price adjustments extend beyond hardware. Starting July 1, 2026, Nintendo Switch Online subscription plans in Japan and South Korea will see a price hike of approximately 20–30%. Furthermore, even Nintendo’s legacy products, such as traditional playing cards and Hanafuda cards sold in Japan, will also see increased prices.
Japan's sharpest price increase (20-26%) is partly due to the volatile yen exchange rate. Nintendo needed to adjust prices to align more closely with global market prices to prevent "reselling"—the practice of buying up consoles from Japan and reselling them overseas—which would impact the domestic supply chain.
Analysts believe Nintendo's willingness to admit a potential decline in console sales indicates a shift towards focusing more on software and services profits. The price increase for Nintendo Switch Online is a preparation for the upcoming release of major games in 2026-2027, aiming to ensure continued revenue per user (ARPU) growth.
The US price tag of $499.99 is particularly noteworthy, as it directly competes with high-end consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This price adjustment challenges brand loyalty and demonstrates that Nintendo's "innovative gameplay" offers sufficient value for consumers to justify a higher price compared to high-end consoles.
