This follows a recent adjustment where Apple removed the 256GB storage tier for the Mac mini, making 512GB the new entry-level standard. However, the situation with RAM is the inverse: rather than raising the floor, Apple is effectively lowering the ceiling, leaving professional users without high-memory options.
The reason Apple cut back on high-RAM options isn't because they don't want to sell them, but because of the global memory shortage crisis. Major manufacturers like SK Hynix and Samsung are focusing their production on high-bandwidth RAM (HBM) to supply the AI server market, leaving a severe shortage of RAM chips for everyday computers.
