Apple Discontinues High-RAM Options Amid Supply Shortages.
Mac Mini and Mac Studio Supply Crunch: Apple Slashes High-RAM Configuration Options

The supply constraints for Apple desktop lineup are reaching a critical point. In a surprising move, Apple has significantly scaled back customization options for the Mac mini and Mac Studio, effectively removing several high-capacity unified memory (RAM) configurations from its online store.

The Shrinking Specs

The current availability for Mac desktops has been narrowed down to the following:

  • Mac mini (M4): Now limited to 16GB or 24GB. The previously available 32GB and 64GB options have been discontinued.

  • Mac mini (M4 Pro): Only 24GB and 48GB remain. The 32GB and 64GB tiers are no longer offered.

  • Mac Studio (M3 Ultra): In the most drastic cut, the M3 Ultra is now restricted to a single 96GB configuration. Previously, users could spec this powerhouse up to a massive 512GB.

This follows a recent adjustment where Apple removed the 256GB storage tier for the Mac mini, making 512GB the new entry-level standard. However, the situation with RAM is the inverse: rather than raising the floor, Apple is effectively lowering the ceiling, leaving professional users without high-memory options.

The reason Apple cut back on high-RAM options isn't because they don't want to sell them, but because of the global memory shortage crisis. Major manufacturers like SK Hynix and Samsung are focusing their production on high-bandwidth RAM (HBM) to supply the AI server market, leaving a severe shortage of RAM chips for everyday computers. Apple is therefore reserving its limited RAM chips for its best-selling mass models instead of custom-made (BTO) models.

The reduction in RAM in the Mac Studio to 96GB reflects Apple's possible shift of memory resources to the Mac Pro or preparation for the upcoming M4 Ultra. Simplifying SKUs (Stock Keeping Units) helps Apple manage its strained supply chain in the short term.

The disappearance of the 64GB RAM model in the Mac mini and the high-RAM option in the Mac Studio directly impacts video editors and 3D animators. Analysts believe this could drive up the price of high-spec Macs in the used market, or it might signal Apple's upcoming release of new desktop models to address the unbalanced specifications.
