Windows 11 Finally Fixes Widgets Say Goodbye to MSN News Clutter.
In the latest Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26300.8346, Microsoft is taking a significant step toward a more "minimalist" operating system. Following a new channel system, the update introduces changes specifically designed to reduce distractions and return control to the user.
The End of Mandatory MSN Feeds
The Widgets board on the Taskbar has long been a point of contention for users due to its cluttered interface, often dominated by MSN news feeds. Microsoft is finally addressing this by disabling the MSN news feed by default.
Upon opening the Widgets board, users will now see a clean layout focused only on essential tools like Weather, Sports, and Stocks. Microsoft is officially splitting the experience into two distinct sections: Widgets (Utility) and Discover (News). This separation allows users to opt-in to news only if they choose.
Focus on "Intentional Interaction"
Beyond the content, Microsoft has tweaked the Taskbar behavior to be less intrusive:
Disabled "Open on Hover": The Widgets board will no longer pop up just by hovering your mouse over the icon. It now requires a deliberate click.
Silent Taskbar: Notification badges for Widgets are turned off by default.
Limited Alerts: Taskbar notifications from widgets are restricted until the user actively engages with the board.
Minimalist Lock Screen: Lock screen widgets are being scaled back to show only the Weather, significantly reducing visual clutter on the login page.
This change reflects the "Quiet Technology" trend. After Microsoft's prolonged attempt to push advertisements and content from MSN into the OS, which drew backlash, this shift back to a cleaner UI indicates that Microsoft is prioritizing "Productivity" over "Engagement Metrics," something that professional and corporate users have consistently demanded.
It's speculated that separating "Widgets" and "Discover" (MSN) may be related to competition laws in some regions (such as the EU) that prohibit OS owners from monopolizing the distribution of their own news content through the operating system's main screen. This adjustment is therefore a preparation for global regulations.
Technically, disabling the news feed and preventing automatic screen opening when the mouse hovers over it reduces resource usage (RAM/CPU) and saves battery life for laptop users to some extent, as the system doesn't have to constantly refresh news information or render pop-up windows in the background.
