DoD Partners with 7 Tech Giants to Military Intelligence.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has officially signed strategic contracts with seven leading Artificial Intelligence companies. This move signals a significant escalation in the integration of advanced large language models (LLMs) and AI infrastructure into military operations, aiming to maintain a technological edge in the modern battlefield.
The "Elite Seven" Partners
The list of contractors includes the world’s most powerful AI and infrastructure providers:
SpaceX (Representing xAI)
OpenAI
Google
Microsoft
NVIDIA
Reflection
AWS (Amazon Web Services)
The Notable Exclusion: Anthropic
One major name missing from this military alliance is Anthropic. The relationship between the AI safety-focused startup and the DoD has been strained since February, following a series of disputes. Currently, both parties are embroiled in a legal battle, which effectively sidelined Anthropic from this lucrative and strategically vital agreement.
This is a significant milestone demonstrating that "dual-use" technologies like generative AI have become strategic weapons. The DoD's choice to utilize services from Microsoft, Google, and AWS simultaneously reflects a multi-cloud strategy to prevent single-point failure and access the widest possible range of models.
The direct involvement of NVIDIA means the military needs more than just "software," but also a level of self-managed "computer power." The entry of SpaceX/xAI is also very interesting, as it could mean connecting AI to the Starlink satellite system for edge computing in remote areas or battlefields.
The absence of Anthropic, known for its "constitutional AI," may raise ethical concerns among critics regarding the military's use of AI. However, the lawsuits may relate to the terms of use that Anthropic typically restricts for "lethal" use, which conflicts with certain Department of Defense missions.
Microsoft Finally Ends the Forced Update Struggle.
