Cloudflare Pivot 1,100 Layoffs Announced as Internal AI Usage Surges 600%.
Cloudflare Surges 34% in Q1 2026 Revenue, Announces Global Workforce Realignment Toward "AI-First" Structure

Cloudflare Inc. has reported a strong opening for 2026, with first-quarter revenue reaching $639.8 million, a robust 34% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite the impressive top-line growth, the company posted a GAAP net loss of $22.9 million. Alongside these financial results, Cloudflare announced a significant organizational shift: the layoff of at least 1,100 employees worldwide as part of a strategic pivot to center the company around Artificial Intelligence.

The 600% AI Surge

Co-founders Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn explained that this decision stems from a radical change in how the company operates internally. Over the past three months, AI usage within Cloudflare has skyrocketed by more than 600%. With AI Agents now integrated into nearly every department to assist with various workflows, the company is restructuring its human workforce to align with this new AI-driven reality.

Not a Cost-Cutting Measure

Cloudflare’s leadership emphasized that these layoffs are not a traditional cost-cutting exercise. Instead, it is a proactive "re-tooling" of the organization. The goal is to ensure that the company’s structure reflects the efficiency gains provided by AI, allowing Cloudflare to remain agile as it transitions into an "AI-First" infrastructure provider.

Cloudflare's claim of a 600% increase in AI usage reflects the "Agentic Workflows" trend: a shift from using AI merely as assistants (chatbots) to becoming "agents" capable of completing tasks independently, such as basic coding, automated network security checks, or support ticket management. This is leading global tech companies to seek different skill sets in their employees—people who can "control AI" rather than those performing repetitive tasks.

While reducing its workforce, Cloudflare is aggressively expanding its Workers AI service (a platform for developers to run AI on the edge). This restructuring may mean shifting human resources from traditional departments to support AI research and development (inference) to compete with giants like AWS and Google Cloud.

Investors tend to view workforce reductions alongside AI adoption positively in terms of efficiency. Despite accounting losses, the 34% revenue growth and the use of technology to reduce excess workload will significantly increase Cloudflare's revenue per employee in subsequent quarters, a key indicator for global software companies.
