NVIDIA Inks 5GW AI Deal with IREN A $2.1 Billion Bet on the Future of AI Factories.
NVIDIA Partners with IREN to Build 5GW AI Infrastructure: A $2.1 Billion Strategic Investment

NVIDIA has announced a massive infrastructure agreement with IREN, a specialized GPU cloud provider, to deploy NVIDIA’s DSX AI computing infrastructure. The deal aims to scale up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of power capacity across IREN’s global data center network, cementing both companies' positions in the rapidly expanding AI economy.

The $2.1 Billion Equity Play

A key highlight of this partnership is the strategic financial alignment. Under the agreement, IREN has granted NVIDIA the right to purchase up to 30 million shares of the company over the next five years at a fixed price of $70 per share. If NVIDIA exercises all options, the total investment would amount to $2.1 billion, potentially making NVIDIA a significant shareholder in one of its most important infrastructure partners.

The Vision of the "AI Factory"

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized the significance of this move, stating that "AI Factories" will become the foundational infrastructure for the new global economy. He praised IREN’s ability to rapidly scale this specialized infrastructure across its established worldwide data center footprint.

This deal follows IREN’s blockbuster agreement last year with Microsoft, valued at $9.7 billion, to provide GPU cloud services, further validating IREN’s role as a critical pillar in the AI supply chain.

The bottleneck in AI isn't just the chip itself, but "electricity." NVIDIA's partnership with IREN to access up to 5 gigawatts of power (equivalent to the power needed to power several large cities) demonstrates NVIDIA's efforts to secure these power resources in advance, ensuring space for its future GPU generations.

Equity strategies in client or partner companies are increasingly employed by NVIDIA. This, known as "Vendor Financing & Strategic Investment," allows NVIDIA not only to sell chips but also to benefit from the growing value of its partners and create strong alliances (lock-in) to prevent competitors like AMD or Intel from easily interfering.

IREN (formerly Iris Energy) was once a giant in Bitcoin mining. Its full transition to AI Cloud, securing multi-billion dollar deals from both Microsoft and NVIDIA, is a prime example of a business "pivot" based on global trends, leveraging its existing strengths in robust power infrastructure and cooling systems.
