The Academy Draws a Hard Line Against AI-Generated Acting and Scripts.
Oscars Update: The Academy Sets Strict "Human-Only" Rules for the 99th Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has officially announced the updated rulebook for the 99th Academy Awards, governing films released in 2026. This year's revision addresses the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence in filmmaking, establishing a clear boundary to protect the integrity of human artistry.

The Human Mandate

The Academy has introduced two critical pillars regarding the eligibility of films involving AI-human collaboration:

  • Acting Categories: Performances must be "demonstrably performed by humans." This rule aims to prevent digital avatars or AI-generated actors from competing against human talent.

  • Screenwriting Categories: To be eligible, scripts "must be human-authored." While AI may be used as a tool, the fundamental creative authorship must belong to a human writer.

Furthermore, The Academy reserves the right to request additional documentation or proof to verify whether a submission meets these "human-first" criteria, especially when Generative AI is suspected to have played a significant role in the production.

The Acting Rules were introduced to address the use of Digital Twins, or AI that mimics the faces and gestures of actors. Recently, AI has been used to "resurrect" deceased actors or to de-aging actors. These rules aim to ensure that the "heart of the performance" comes from real, flesh-and-blood humans, not the processing of algorithms.

This rule adjustment aligns with the agreement reached following the large-scale protests by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) in Hollywood. The Academy wants to signal that the Oscars represent the highest standard of "human craftsmanship," alleviating industry concerns that AI will usurp the prestigious award.

The key point to watch is the "borderline." Currently, almost every stage of the process utilizes AI (e.g., color grading, sound editing). The Academy's statement that they may request additional data suggests they are beginning to employ a team of technical vetting experts to analyze whether a work relies too much on AI to the point of losing its human element. This represents a new standard for global awards ceremonies.
