Spotify Streamlines Video Podcast Distribution: Unveils New APIs and Apple HLS Support

Spotify has announced a major infrastructure update designed to empower video podcast creators and simplify their publishing workflows. By lowering technical barriers and improving cross-platform compatibility, the streaming giant aims to position itself as the ultimate destination for multi-format content.

1. Instant Publishing via Spotify Distribution API

In a move to automate the distribution process, several major video podcast hosting platforms have integrated the new Spotify Distribution API. Creators hosting their content on these networks will now see their video podcasts automatically synchronized and published to Spotify in real-time.

The initial rollout includes popular hosting providers such as Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspace.

2. Seamless Bridging from Apple Podcasts via HLS

For creators who primarily rely on Apple ecosystem, Spotify is introducing a major technical bridge. The platform now supports Apple's proprietary HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology.

This integration allows video creators on Apple Podcasts to seamlessly syndicate their video feeds over to Spotify without having to re-encode, re-upload, or manually alter their existing file formats, drastically reducing administrative overhead.

The Strategy: Embracing Content Flexibility

Spotify emphasized that the video podcast market is experiencing exponential growth. By restructuring its backend tools to accommodate rival infrastructures and third-party hosting sites, Spotify is prioritizing creator flexibility making it easier than ever for podcasters to reach global audiences without being locked into a single platform's ecosystem.

Spotify's move to automate clip syncing is a direct battle with YouTube for creators. YouTube has long dominated the video podcast market, but Spotify's strength lies in its background playback feature (audio only, screen off). Allowing creators to "upload clips once and have them distributed across all platforms" will likely attract more creators to submit videos to Spotify.

Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology is a very stable video streaming standard. It will automatically adjust the video resolution based on the listener's internet speed. Spotify's acceptance of Apple's HLS platform means Spotify users will enjoy a smooth, uninterrupted podcast viewing experience, even if creators don't directly upload files to Spotify's system.

Creators' behavior has shifted towards an omnichannel era. Forcing creators to manually upload multi-gigabyte video files to separate apps is outdated. Spotify's "open partnership" strategy through its Distribution API therefore addresses the needs of modern influencers and production houses who want "one-click deployment," completing the work in one place and distributing it globally.
