Samsung DRAM Monopoly Threatened by Massive 18-Day Strike Over Bonus Formulas.
Samsung Electronics Labor Crisis Escalates: Union Set for 18-Day Strike After Blockbuster Marathon Talks Collapse

The global semiconductor supply chain faces a brewing disruption as the primary labor union representing Samsung Electronics workers prepares to trigger an unprecedented 18-day coordinated strike. The drastic escalation follows the complete collapse of last-ditch compensation and bonus negotiations between union representatives and corporate executives.

The Midnight Breakdown and the Bonus Dispute

In a grueling display of labor gridlock, the final negotiation session dragged on for over fourteen hours commencing at 10:00 AM and breaking down without an agreement at 12:30 AM the following morning.

The core impasse revolves around a fundamental disagreement over structural bonus distribution formulas:

  • The Union's Stance: Representatives state they have made all possible concessions. Their primary demand is a semi-permanent, multi-year policy requiring Samsung to allocate 15% of its total operating profit exclusively for worker bonuses. Furthermore, they demand the total abolition of the legacy corporate cap, which strictly limits annual bonuses to a maximum of 50% of an employee’s total yearly salary.

  • The Corporate Defense: Executive leadership flatly rejected the demands as "financially unviable." Management highlighted that the union’s rigid formula would force the company to pay out hefty bonuses even to employees stationed within deep-deficit business divisions that are currently losing money.

The SK Hynix Comparison and Global Ramifications

To justify the aggressive strike actions, union organizers pointed directly to their fierce domestic rival, SK Hynix, claiming that SK Hynix factory floor workers and engineers have recently walked away with performance bonuses nearly three times larger than those paid by Samsung.

This labor friction comes at a vulnerable time for global hardware manufacturing. Samsung Electronics is the undisputed world champion of Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) production, commanding a dominant 36% global market share. Together with SK Hynix and Micron Technology, the three entities form an ironclad oligopoly controlling the global memory supply. Any prolonged halt in Samsung’s fabrication facilities could trigger sharp pricing volatility in memory modules worldwide.

The deep-seated resentment among Samsung employees, fueling their anger and comparisons to competitors like SK Hynix, stems from the issue of HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory), the high-speed RAM used in NVIDIA's AI processors. In the past, SK Hynix monopolized the HBM3 and HBM3E chip production lines, resulting in massive profits and generous bonuses for its employees. Meanwhile, Samsung faced delays in qualification tests, leaving its semiconductor employees feeling that they were working harder but receiving less compensation than competitors due to strategic mistakes by management.

Even though Samsung's modern chip manufacturing plants in Pyeongtaek and Giheung utilize near-100% automation and robotic cleanroom systems, the 18-day shortage of system engineers and maintenance engineers poses a critical risk. Even a slight malfunction or contamination of silicon wafers could result in production losses worth billions of won per day.

Samsung maintained a strict "no-union policy" in its management for nearly 50 years since its founding. However, this policy has only recently been broken, and this 18-day strike is the biggest test in the company's history on how modern management will deal with the power of labor relations within the current capitalist structure.
