Microsoft and Samsung Terminate Gallery Cloud Sync with OneDrive.
Microsoft and Samsung Dissolve Cloud Integration: Samsung Gallery Sync to OneDrive to End in September 2026

In a significant shift for the Android user ecosystem, Microsoft has officially announced the termination of its native cloud backup integration between the Samsung Gallery app and OneDrive. This specialized synchronization feature, which allowed Samsung users to seamlessly back up their photos and videos directly from the native gallery, will officially cease operations on September 30, 2026.

The End of a Six-Year Strategic Alliance

This cross-platform partnership was originally forged in 2020, debuting alongside the launch of the flagship Galaxy Note 20 series (initially established during the late-2019 Note 10 era transition). The alliance was engineered to replace Samsung's proprietary Samsung Cloud storage platform, which was completely phased out in favor of Microsoft's cloud infrastructure.

According to updated documentation on Microsoft's official support page, users will no longer be able to utilize the automated background sync directly from the Samsung Gallery interface after the September deadline. Microsoft advises affected customers to transition to the standalone OneDrive app for Android to manually or automatically manage their media backups moving forward.

The Quiet Sunset

Neither Microsoft nor Samsung has publicly disclosed the precise strategic motivation behind stripping away this deeply integrated UX feature. However, industry analysts widely attribute the decision to the natural expiration of their multi-year commercial partnership agreement, which neither corporation chose to renew.

The impact on the User Experience (UX) of Samsung Galaxy users worldwide is significant. Previously, the system's strength lay in its seamless integration; photos taken on the phone would instantly appear in a cloud folder on a Windows computer without needing to open other apps. Forcing users to switch to a separate OneDrive app for backup will lead to "redundant background processing" and a regrettable loss of fluidity within the ecosystem.

Samsung's termination of this agreement with Microsoft may signal its desire to focus more on promoting Google One/Google Photos to align with its AI collaboration (Google Gemini embedded in Galaxy AI). Modern AI-powered photo analysis requires data retrieval through tightly interconnected cloud systems. Allowing Microsoft to continue possessing raw media data from Samsung users may no longer align with Samsung's long-term AI strategy.

Users are advised to check their cloud storage capacity before September 2026, as the free storage included in Samsung's Microsoft partnership promotion may expire. Migrating directly to the OneDrive app or downloading files back to your computer (Local Storage Automation) is therefore something users should start planning for today.
