Google Unveils Googlebook The AI-First Laptop Designed to Rival MacBook.
Moving away from its long-standing reputation as a budget-friendly option, Google has officially introduced "Googlebook" This new brand identity targets the high-end market, combining premium hardware with deep Gemini Intelligence integration to redefine the productivity experience on ChromeOS.
The AI-Centric Experience: "Magic Pointer"
The standout feature of the Googlebook lineup is the Magic Pointer. This intuitive tool allows users to summon Gemini simply by "shaking" the cursor. Once activated, Gemini can interact with any data currently on the screen. For example, a quick shake over a specific date in an email can instantly create a calendar invitation.
Additionally, the "Create My Widget" feature originally debuted on Android has been ported to Googlebook, allowing users to generate bespoke, AI-powered widgets for their dashboards. The ecosystem is further strengthened by seamless screen sharing and instant file transfers with Android devices.
The "Chromebook Plus" Evolution
Rather than manufacturing the hardware itself, Google is partnering with industry giants to build devices under the Googlebook brand, a strategy reminiscent of the Chromebook Plus initiative. This ensures a diverse range of premium designs while maintaining a unified, high-performance standard.
Confirmed manufacturing partners for the Googlebook launch include:
Acer
Asus
Dell
HP
Lenovo
Google Books will come with significantly higher minimum standards, such as high-nit displays, premium touch keyboards, and, importantly, a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to process Gemini Intelligence directly on the device (on-device AI) without relying on the cloud constantly.
The rebranding from Chromebook to Google Book aims to erase the image of a "laptop for education." Google is targeting creative professionals and business people who need the speed of a lightweight operating system that works seamlessly with AI agents, directly challenging the MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface.
The fact that Google Books can borrow features like Create My Widget from Android reflects a strategy of convergence between ChromeOS and Android, making them more seamless. Cross-device functionality will become a key selling point that will drive people to pay a premium price.
