Alibaba Q1 2026: AI Revenue Surges as Cloud Business Becomes the New Growth Engine

Alibaba Group has reported its financial results for the quarter ended March 2026, posting a total revenue of 243.38 billion yuan, a 3% increase year-over-year. However, the underlying growth is much stronger; excluding the recently divested retail entities Sun Art and Intime, revenue actually grew by 11%.

The Profitability Nuance

While the company reported a net income of 23.502 billion yuan, Alibaba clarified that the bulk of this profit resulted from mark-to-market gains on equity investments. Stripping away these investment returns and non-recurring items, the company’s core operational profit stood at a modest 86 million yuan, reflecting a period of heavy reinvestment and market adjustment.

Cloud & AI: The Triple-Digit Phenomenon

The true standout in this report is Alibaba Cloud, which saw its revenue jump 38% to 41.626 billion yuan. This growth is fueled by an insatiable demand for AI-driven solutions. Notably, AI-related product revenue has maintained triple-digit growth for the 11th consecutive quarter.

Eddie Wu, CEO of Alibaba Group, highlighted two critical points:

  • AI Monetization: AI products now contribute 30% of total Cloud revenue.

  • Model Leadership: The QWEN large language model continues to dominate the market, with significant room for further expansion.

What has driven QWEN's rapid growth is its open-source strategy. Alibaba releases multiple versions of its model for developers to use for free, creating a very strong ecosystem in China and Southeast Asia. When companies need to run these models on an industrial scale, they often rent servers on Alibaba Cloud, generating sustainable revenue.

The 38% revenue growth isn't solely driven by China. By 2026, Alibaba Cloud is aggressively expanding into the Global South market (ASEAN, the Middle East, Africa), highlighting its competitive pricing compared to AWS or Azure and its excellent multilingual AI capabilities, making it a primary choice for startups worldwide.

Even after selling off some of its retail businesses, Alibaba continues to leverage AI from the cloud to enhance Lazada and AliExpress, such as real-time translation and personalized product recommendations, significantly boosting gross merchandise volume (GMV) in international markets.
