Organizational Scaling Friction:Starfield marked Bethesda's first multi-studio collaborative project, involving over 500 developers across several satellite offices. Compared to the streamlined team of roughly 150 core developers who created Fallout 4, internal communication became unwieldy, causing massive delays in content pipelines.
Engine & Systems Dependencies: Because Bethesda had no prior experience developing vehicle physics, space flight mechanics, or planetary landing systems, engineering teams had to build entirely new engine systems from scratch. Design teams were forced to sit idle waiting for core engine tools to finalize, creating long development bottlenecks.
Compromised World Content: The cascading delays forced significant cuts to final game content, resulting in far fewer handcrafted alien creatures, unique POIs (Points of Interest), and biological biomes than originally planned across its procedural star systems.
