Microsoft Restructures Xbox Gaming Division: Studio Consolidations, Franchise Realignments, and Strategic DivestmentsMicrosoft Corporation has announced a major secondary restructuring across its Xbox gaming division following initial organizational shifts earlier this summer. The strategic overhaul introduces targeted workforce reductions, consolidates flagship development studios under core publishing umbrellas, and resolves the operational status of several internal game development entities.
Workforce Reductions and Flagship Franchise Restructuring
The restructuring impacts 268 staff members across multiple internal studios, core management teams, and central support operations:
Workforce Reductions: A total of 268 positions have been eliminated, with Halo Studios taking the primary hit alongside central administrative and support operations across Xbox Game Studios.
Activision Publishing Expansion: Activision has formally integrated World’s Edge (Age of Empires franchise) and Rare into its organizational umbrella. Additionally, Activision will form an entirely new internal development team tasked with directing the next mainline Halo entry, while remaining personnel at Halo Studios will focus strictly on live-service support and maintenance for existing titles.
Bethesda Integration: Bethesda Softworks has absorbed Obsidian Entertainment into its publishing structure. Active development on upcoming titles within the Fallout franchise will continue uninterrupted under the combined entity.
Mobile and Casual Consolidation: King has integrated Microsoft Casual Games (developers of legacy Windows titles such as Solitaire and Minesweeper), unifying Microsoft’s casual and mobile gaming portfolios under a single management pipeline.
Forza Racing Alignment: Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios the twin developers behind the Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport series have been formally merged into a single consolidated racing development organization.
Resolution Status of Previously Restructured Studios
Microsoft also updated the operational status of five development studios flagged during its earlier July organizational review:
Compulsion Games & Double Fine Productions: Both studios have been sold back to their original founders, regaining independent status along with full ownership rights to their respective intellectual property portfolios.
Undead Labs: Sold back to its founding management team. Development on State of Decay 3 will proceed under a new third-party publisher while retaining its commitment to launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Ninja Theory: Unable to secure an acquiring buyer, the studio will officially cease operations and shut down.
Arkane Studios: Acquisition and buyout negotiations remain actively ongoing with potential external partners.
