Microsoft Streamlines Windows 11: Removing 8 Copilot Commands from File Explorer.
Microsoft Backtracks on Windows 11 Copilot Overload, Removing 8 AI Context Menu Options from File Explorer

Following sustained pushback from desktop users criticizing excessive artificial intelligence integration throughout Windows 11, Microsoft has announced plans to streamline its operating system interface. The company will remove eight dedicated Copilot context menu commands from File Explorer, marking a clear strategic retreat from aggressive OS-level AI feature placement.

Removed Context Menu Features, File Explorer Streamlining, and Timeline

  • The 8 Removed File Explorer Context Commands:

    • Summarize: Generates instant summary overviews of selected text documents.

    • Create FAQ: Automatically extracts key questions and answers from file contents.

    • Compare Files: Analyzes structural and text differences across multiple documents.

    • Ask a Question: Queries Copilot regarding specific contents inside selected files.

    • Explain Image: Generates natural language descriptions of visual content in single image files.

    • Explain Images: Performs batch visual analysis across multiple selected image files.

    • Compare Images: Evaluates visual variations between multiple image files.

    • Extract Text: Optical character recognition (OCR) extraction converting image text into editable string formats.

  • Integration Details and Phased Rollout Schedule:

    • Retention of Core Functionality via OneDrive: The removal of these standalone menu entries does not fully eliminate Copilot capabilities. Because these eight options relied heavily on OneDrive cloud integration, users can still access file analysis features via the consolidated Ask Copilot entry point.

    • Rollout Window: Microsoft will begin phasing out these eight context options in mid-November 2026, with complete removal expected across production builds by early December 2026.

  • Broad Reduction of Copilot UI Clutter:

    • Snipping Tool and Photos Adjustments: Microsoft previously removed the direct "Ask Copilot" button from native utility applications including Snipping Tool and Microsoft Photos.

    • Notepad Rebranding: The standalone Copilot action within Notepad was rebranded to Writing Tools to provide clear, functional descriptions rather than general AI marketing labels.

    • Addressing "Microslop" Backlash: The recalibration comes amid growing user frustration over forced AI feature placement, a phenomenon widely criticized online under the derogatory term "Microslop" referring to intrusive, low-utility AI integrations ("slop") pushed into core OS workflows.
