Canva Debuts Proprietary Craft Image Model to Power Generative Workflows for 250M Users.
Canva Debuts First Proprietary Image Generation Model "Canva Craft" Developed by Canva Research
Visual communication platform Canva has officially launched Canva Craft, the company’s first in-house generative image model. Developed and trained by the specialized Canva Research division, the new model is now live for Canva's global user base and is integrated directly into the platform's design suite alongside external developer API access.
Benchmark Performance, Architectural Innovation, and Scalable Runtime Variants
Competitive Benchmarking on DesignArena:
Industry Standing: On the DesignArena comparative benchmark, Canva Craft ranks 4th overall, placing directly behind leading OpenAI image generation iterations (GPT Image 2 and 2.5 variants).
Outperforming Market Alternatives: Craft secured higher preference scores compared to several established generative image models across the industry, including Reve, MAI-Image, Grok Imagine, and Nano Banana.
Category-Specific Specialization: Craft claims the #1 rank in generating photorealistic portraits and high-detail landscape imagery, and holds the #2 position for abstract visuals and seamless pattern generation. In contrast, stylized cartoon generation scored lower, ranking 17th across domain categories.
Architectural Separation and High-Resolution Output Engine:
Compositional Planning Framework: Craft employs a decoupled architecture that separates the compositional planning phase from the pixel rendering process. This structural division allows the model to perform spatial reasoning and layout planning before generating individual image elements, resulting in vastly improved prompt accuracy and object placement.
Rendering Capabilities: The rendering engine supports output resolutions up to 2K (2048x2048) and offers more than 30 customizable aspect ratio presets for social media, print, and digital ad formats.
High-Throughput Infrastructure and Developer API Access:
Enterprise Scale: Built to serve Canva’s global active user base of over 250 million users who collectively generate an average of 400 images per second the engineering team developed specialized lightweight variants, including Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, to ensure sub-second response times during peak demand.
Standalone API Rollout: In addition to native web and mobile app integration, Canva has opened a public developer API, allowing third-party software creators and enterprise workflows to leverage Canva Craft outside the core Canva interface.
