Cloudflare Challenges Hackers with $3,000 Bounty to Test WAF Defenses Against PHP2Shell.

Cloudflare Challenges Hackers with $3,000 Bounty to Test WAF Defenses Against PHP2Shell.
Cloudflare Puts WAF to the Test Against PHP2Shell Vulnerability with $3,000 HackerOne Bounty Challenge

Following the public disclosure of the high-severity PHP2Shell vulnerability which recently prompted several governments to temporarily shut down public-facing web portals as a precautionary measure cloud infrastructure titan Cloudflare has launched a live security challenge. Designed to evaluate the real-world defense capabilities of its Web Application Firewall (WAF), the company deployed a vulnerable PHP environment behind its protective WAF layers to test whether edge security controls can effectively mitigate the threat.

Challenge Architecture, Container Environment, and WAF Mitigation Limits

  • High-Risk Server Configuration Setup:

    • Apache and Legacy mod_php Integration: Unlike previous security benchmarks that tested isolated PHP-FPM setups, Cloudflare purposefully configured the testbed using Apache paired with mod_php a classic architecture known to be particularly exposed to full remote code execution vectors when exploited by PHP2Shell.

    • Standard Stack Build: The server runs an unpatched PHP 8.5.11 environment equipped with standard default extensions, creating a high-stress evaluation environment for inline web traffic filtering engines.

  • Contest Rules, Container Resets, and Bounty Rewards:

    • HackerOne Bounty Reward: Security researchers who successfully bypass Cloudflare’s WAF protections to read a hidden flag file located on the target server will claim a $3,000 bounty via HackerOne.

    • Ephemeral Container Architecture: To ensure fair testing and isolate successful exploit states, the PHP environment operates inside an ephemeral Cloudflare Container framework that automatically wipes and resets its state every few minutes.

  • Strategic WAF Validation and Critical Patching Boundaries:

    • Demonstrating Edge Protection: A successful defense against automated exploit attempts serves as empirical proof of Cloudflare WAF's deep packet inspection and signature filtering capabilities for enterprise clients.

    • WAF is Not a Replacement for Patching: Cloudflare explicitly emphasized that inline Web Application Firewalls serve as temporary protective shields rather than permanent fixes. The company reiterated that deploying WAF rules should never replace applying official upstream security patches directly to core application servers.
