Microsoft Overhauls Windows Photos with Native WinUI 3 iCloud Sync and AI Relight Tools.
Microsoft has officially unveiled a major redesign of the classic Windows Photos application. Built from the ground up to address historical performance bottlenecks, the overhauled app is divided into three core pillars: a unified Gallery, a native image Editor, and a streamlined Viewer.
Architectural Redesign, Cross-Cloud Sync, and Performance Metrics
Unified Gallery and Multi-Cloud Synchronization:
One Fast, Beautiful Gallery Vision: Designed around a centralized multimedia hub, the new Gallery aggregates images from multiple storage sources into a single seamless timeline.
Dual Cloud Integration: In addition to native OneDrive camera roll backups, the app now integrates with iCloud for Windows, automatically syncing and displaying Apple device photo libraries directly within the Windows Photos interface.
Advanced AI Organization: Features modern gallery capabilities including automated "Moments" memory curation, facial recognition grouping ("People"), and natural language image search.
Fluid Scroll Performance: Microsoft re-engineered the rendering pipeline to eliminate stuttering when rapidly scrolling through massive multi-gigabyte photo libraries.
High-Performance Native WinUI 3 Image Editor:
25% Faster Launch Speeds: Rewritten entirely in native WinUI 3 code, the new editor reduces startup lag and expands format compatibility to handle advanced modern standards including HDR, HEIC, and WebP files.
Reorganized Tool Categorization: Editing tools are streamlined into four logical categories: Crop, Enhance, Repair, and Stylize.
Advanced AI Manipulation Tools:
Object Removal: Seamlessly erases unwanted background objects or blemishes using generative AI fill.
AI Relight: Dynamically adjusts and repositions up to three independent virtual light sources within an image post-capture.
Social Media Crop Presets: Includes instant aspect ratio templates optimized for platform-specific sharing across Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
Streamlined and Accelerated Image Viewer:
15% Faster Startup and 30% Faster HEIC Loading: The standalone image viewer opens files faster while accelerating HEIC rendering speeds by 30%.
Minimalist Chrome Design: The viewing canvas removes clutter to maximize screen estate, accompanied by a modernized metadata overlay panel featuring live image histograms.
Native SVG Support: Extends default format support to vector-based SVG files alongside enhanced HDR display calibration.
Rollout Timeline:
The redesigned Windows Photos application is currently rolling out to Windows Insider channels and will reach general availability for all Windows 11 users later this year.
