EA Restructures Under Saudi PIF Ownership: BioWare Closed and Mass Effect 5 Canceled.
EA Announces Major Restructuring Under Saudi PIF Ownership: BioWare Shut Down, Mass Effect 5 Canceled, and Focus Shifted to Core Franchises
Electronic Arts (EA) has unveiled a massive corporate restructuring following its acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in 2025. The most significant revelation from the strategic pivot is the closure of legendary development studio BioWare and the official cancellation of the highly anticipated Mass Effect 5. While select BioWare developers will be offered roles across other internal EA teams, the shutdown will result in workforce reductions across affected departments.
EA’s Three-Pillar Strategy and Studio Realignment
The Three Strategic Growth Pillars:
Deepen Our Core: Channeling capital and developer talent into proven, high-revenue franchises to maximize return on investment.
Expand Our Reach: Growing global player bases for established intellectual properties, with an explicit corporate mandate to aggressively expand market share across Asian gaming regions.
Transform Our Business: Overhauling business models particularly within the EA Sports ecosystem to drive deeper fan engagement and long-term recurring digital revenue.
Four Core Gaming Portfolios and Studio Re-Allocations:
Shooter Franchises: Building on the momentum of Battlefield 6, EA is pairing development powerhouses Respawn Entertainment and DICE to co-develop future entry titles in the Battlefield ecosystem. Additionally, Apex Legends will receive increased long-term funding and live-service support.
Action-Adventure Titles: Citing high market competition, EA is streamlining its action portfolio to focus on fewer, large-scale flagship blockbusters. While Motive’s Marvel’s Iron Man and Respawn’s third entry in the Star Wars Jedi series remain in active development, smaller mid-tier projects are being phased out contributing directly to BioWare's closure as a smaller studio unit.
EA Sports Expansion: The sports division continues to serve as EA’s primary financial engine. Alongside ongoing flagship franchises like EA Sports FC, EA announced two major projects: Project Gridiron (an open-world American football experience) and the revival of the iconic boxing franchise Fight Night, which has been dormant since 2011.
Lifestyle and Simulation Games: Strategic focus shifts heavily toward The Sims and Skate. Within The Sims lineup, resources are being redirected toward the unannounced Project Evergreen, while development on Project Lotus (formerly Project Rene) has been discontinued. Meanwhile, the Skate development team has been scaled back, reducing its post-launch content roadmap.
